I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates Miku and Mikufags. Unlike Touhou which at least has games to fall back on, Miku at core is another mostly doujin-driven movement (that's recently been primped up for MAXIMUM CAPITALISM) only based off of a shitty voice synth program. I use goddamn studio/VST interface programs all the time, if anyone should be a fan it's me since I actually know how to work what Miku is centered around (unlike >99% of the fans) and yet I still don't like it because it's just not a useful program for me. It can't sing in English for shit. Miku is a phenomenon driven by random dudes saving thousands of Miku pics off of Pixiv and/or listening to amazingly garbage music that uses Vocaloid, and nothing else.

As someone else said earlier in the thread, it's for people who have never heard real music.. or imo, rather people who are too unsophisticated to know good music when they hear it.

Liking some of the good /jp/ related things does NOT mean that you have to accept/buy into all the fucking garbage that Japan pumps out as well. Well duh, it's precisely because it's a Japanese-oriented program that I have no use of it.

That being said, it's only used in garbage J-pop music because it can't vocalize very well in solo performances compared to the real thing. If it actually could sing incredibly well I'd be fine with it, but it can't. Japanese isn't that bad of a singing language either and so I'm not even trying to be biased, Miku just sounds flat and robotic to me because, big surprise, it's synth that can't vocalize portamento correctly. Such voices should be chorus backups at best rather than lead. If I wanted to use machine voices I'd at least use put them through some filter sends that make them sound fucking awesome / impossible for human voice to do (like low-octave square wave vocoder among other countless modulation possibilities), at least if it sings in a way impossible for humans then it HAS purpose... but, if it sings like a human but does it badly then it's just a cheesy tech demo propped up by the mascots / mindless Japanese tech circlejerking / jingoist marketing at work trying to smear this shit all over the world.

i love miku in general, but i wouldn't defend her quality as a human voice emulator or the quality of her music.

i see miku as more or less something that will be good/big in the future. if nothing else, i'm looking forward to future developments in voice synth quality rather than trying to appreciate it fully in its current state. it's pretty undeniable that she's currently second rate when it comes to imitating human singing, but i find her/a few of her songs to be cute on occasion and that's good enough to make me interested for now.

either way, as to the music, it shouldn't be ignored that it's the fans/some professional companies who make the music. it's usually bad, but that's not really a problem with miku/the voice synth program itself.

i think i'd actually prefer her not to become too popular as i'm not fond of the idea of her developing a strict, official personality aimed at a worldwide audience. i'm a tasteless virgin who adores cute things, and i'm conscious of the fact that that clashes with what most of society wants. tl;dr i don't trust mass media exposure/an attempt at globalization to do anything good, although there are obvious possibilities which i can't ignore either... hmm. note that i'm not saying it shouldn't happen, i'm just not sure i'm looking forward to it.

Nobody realizes the potential of Vocaloid? Of course it sounds robotic now, it's technology that's still in development. If you actually listen to Vocaloid songs, you hear the difference between a shitty composer and one that actually worked on making their Vocaloid sound good. Right now they sound robotic, but the newer Vocaloids have been getting closer and closer to sounding like real voices. Eventually they'll get there, probably with Vocaloid 3.
