Either way... if she's one of the Genji Monogatari version, she just hangs around the bridge because it's her home.
If she's one of the earlier Chinese versions, she would seem to be the ghost or vengeful spirit of someone drowned at the bridge.
If she's one of the modern hashihime, she's more of a local goddess than a youkai - her domain is her bridge and no further.
If she's one of the popular culture ones, she's just a symptom of Japan making everything cute - including bridge trolls.

Well according to the wikia (and the KamS video) she guarded a bridge and made sure people who crossed it to reach the underworld (meet with the dead) made it there and back safe. But because of her jealousy she could not stand people being happy while she got nothing out of it so she made it hard for people to cross the bridge and thus making it, if we consider soundtrack titles canon, the bridge people no longer cross.

KamS renders her as a variation on the Chinese theme - though rather than a vengeful spirit, she comes out as a youkai created from a traumatic event (if you trust the hocus pocus in the video, it would seem someone killed herself for the specific purpose of creating a haunting).

It's an interesting variation. The legend usually has a woman drown herself to join with her dead (and faithful into death) husband.

well, since it seems the fanbase has not decided on that one, I will have to use logic here.

Western trolls have little to do with jealousy and bridges to underworld, so i will say it's the least likely possibility.

To be a goddess, you need to have followers. It could be an interesting story how she lost her followers and got stuck on that bridge, eventually turning into youkai by the power of her own jealousy rather than just disappearing like most follower-less goddesses would do. But it still seems quite far from how she is usually interperted, so I don't really know what to think.

to be drowned at a bridge that in the first place leads you to the underworld? to die twice... she should have turn out far more bitter than she was presented. her dialog is far to cheerful in-game, but most of her doujin interpetations seems to fit this view.

It's nice to have a home, but a home is not a jail, why would she be jealous of people crossing it?

Conclusion: All hail Parsee, the goddess of jealousy! with this she now enters the exclusive club of touhou goddesses, along with Kanako, Suwako, Hina, Aki, Sizuha, Sanae, Mima, Shinki, Komachi, Iku and Reimu.

From what I gather, the people crafted by hand got a headstart in life, while the mass produced people were left to struggle. It was a mythologic explanation for inequality in society, with the usual mythological explanation - the gods made it that way

I thought the dialogue in MoF against Sanae rather clearly showed that it was the difference between the two mikos - meaning Reimu is not in fact a goddess by any means.

I just realized something. I've never once seen a doujin of Parsee. She's almost always off to the side, and simply used as a gag for her jealousy. It's really quite a shame.
