No actual sales for a record are ever known, so I'm guessing you're taking some polling firm's (Oricon's, since it's Japan, but it's the same everywhere in the world) numbers as being accurate rather than estimates.

On the other hand, industry certifications must have sufficient evidence, so you can safely assume that a certified album sold at least the amount needed. Which is 100.000, in this case.

FYI : SNSD's success in Japan doesnt make or break the group since their popularity extends throughout Asia - as evidenced by their soldout concerts in Taiwan or in the US (SMTown Concert). While 'huge' Japanese groups such as Arashi or AKB48's success depends in Japan, since nobody outside of Japan cares.
