Hey /jp/, got a hypothetical for you

You might be familiar with the old "Brain in a vat" thought experiment. Basically, assume it's possible to somehow transfer your conscious perception to some entirely fabricated reality. For all intents and purposes, the false perceptions you have while in this state are absolutely similar to the perceptions you have while in 'real' reality.

Further, assume you can create whatever world you want while in this state. Like lucid dreaming, but much more coherent. You don't necessarily have to be god, but you are responsible for establishing the setting.

Would you be fine being hooked up to such a machine? Most people wouldn't.

Fuck yes I would

>> No.6282405

Why would anyone not?

>> No.6282406

Like the matrix?
Fine with me, but I'd rather be here.

>> No.6282407

certainly.

>> No.6282408

Why wouldn't they? Because it wouldn't be real? You wouldn't even be able to tell if it were real or not.

>For all intents and purposes, the false perceptions you have while in this state are absolutely similar to the perceptions you have while in 'real' reality.
>Further, assume you can create whatever world you want while in this state. Like lucid dreaming, but much more coherent.

I'm sold. Any vats free?

Even if it wasn't fully safe/tested I'd hook myself up so fucking fast

>> No.6282420

This is what I dimly try to emulate by sitting in the dark at night and alternately dicking around on the Internet or playing video games.

>> No.6282429

I wouldn't provided I can have some measure of certainty that the current world is real.

I'd rather have a better delusion over a worse delusion, but I would always have reality first.

>> No.6282441

Perception is reality, so I don't see what the problem with being hooked up to such a device is.

Wouldn't living in a dream world take the dream ouf of it, becoming just another world?

Most people are too connected to their own perception of their body.
Most people also believe in some all-powerful divinity that's controlling the fate of the world in a throne behind the clouds.

I share this man's sentiments.

Is this like a Total Recall kind of thing?

I'd be willing to visit if it were possible. If not, then no. Despite there being no evidence that our current perception of the world is in some way 'true', we can sense in this realm of perception that what you're proposing is somehow less true.

Personally, I have high hopes for the afterlife anyway.

>> No.6282865

It wouldn't really be that good, you know.

You're limited by your own imagination. Even if you were to fill a world with nothing but waifus, you'd still be lonely because your waifu would just be a shade compared to what you actually want. Do you think that just imagining up a fake version of your waifu will suddenly make you happy? You'll always know in the back of your mind it's not anything even close to the real thing.

>> No.6282883

>>6282865
If your own imagination is as lifeless as you feel our waifus to be, indeed, you would be miserable.

I, on the other hand, know that the human psyche is much more complex, and capable of conjuring exactly what it desires, to the more perfect degree, to such an extent to fool even itself with doubts of what is and is not "real".

There are people currently coping with waifus that are simply figments of the imagination; they don't even have form as OP's experiment would be able to provide. At the very least it would be an improvement.

>> No.6282920

>Most people wouldn't.
This is hard to believe. If it's true that only shows how retarded people are.

>> No.6282960

>>6282920
Just because you find it easy to escape doesn't mean most people also do.

A lot of people are taught that they can only lead fulfilling lives if they raise children, for example. So those people would think "Being a brain in a jar won't make offspring, so it's not something I want to do"

>You're limited by your own imagination.
This is the only downside. I know I have enough of a vivid imagination to entertain myself for the rest of my days, but I'd always know that as vivid as it may be, there would never be anything I couldn't imagine.

>> No.6283041

No thank you.jpg. I don't even like lucid dreaming.

Sign me up for one of those super bionic heart valves or whatever. Could live to like age 200 with those.

There's nothing wrong with optimism, nor is there any evidence to suggest that an afterlife is an impossibility or even an improbability.
