If I wanted to buy a figurine that's been out of stores, how do I find a reputable dealer? I've found the fig in question on ebay, but I've literally never purchased a fig before and remain extremely skeptical about the validity of any of these sellers.

Is there a fig-purchasing 101 anywhere?

Ebay is mostly legit. But still, always check the feedback. Hong Kong has a fair share of bootlegs, but even there you can often find normal stuff, American sellers have a generally good rep. Bootlegs are often obvious when comparing pictures. And if you get something that doesn't look right you should be able to fire up a complain.

Amiami and HobbySearch (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/)) are your best bets for current and future figures. For older stuff, eBay and Mandarake (http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/)) are good. http://myfigurecollection.net/ is a good resource for finding all the different figures there might be of a character. As far as shipping goes, I always use EMS. It costs more, but it's insured and it takes 2-3 days instead of 3-4 weeks like SAL would.

I do prefer quality figures. I usually buy alter, goodsmile, or amiami, unless it's something I really want, or something that's not a figure. Nearly my entire collection is made up of goodsmile and alter figures. The truth is, if I like a figure made by alter, I'll usually end up buying it, because I know it will be a good sculpt. On the subject of size though... Yeah, most of my collection is in the dfc/small range.

Well not many places sell kits like that prepainted. Yeti will be original and really costly and e2046 will be a bootleg but nicely painted and cheap. Alternatively look for the kit then pay for it to get painted but it will be pretty expensive anyway. It's very cute.
