I just started watching Idolm@ster Xenoglossia and I'm still confused at why there are robots in it.

Xenoglossia is a standalone work. It changes some characters and personalities and such, but it works fine. Plus there's a yuri couple and a canon gay girl, and shouting and explosions and shit.
