Well, I finally 95% YMK yesterday (the other 5% is the goddamn missing Aya route), and /jp/ was totally right.

1. Aeka route, gratifying as it may have felt, IS EXTREMELY OVERRATED! Let's stand and survive together, only to quit school and run away from our problems like we both should've done weeks before without getting out asses nearly kicked! YAYZ!

Nekoko route was weak.
Mizuki route wasn't half bad, though I still don't understand what her supposed problem was? "Interpersonal"? lol
Aeka route was overrated, yeah, but her situation was the only one that was ultimately worth solving.

Whereas Hiroko got into drugs herself and Mizuki's dilemma is too vague to impose a sense of duty or urgency, Aeka's bullying problem is presented so early in the game that you feel like shit for taking another girl's route. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who secretely apologized.

Nonetheless, it was nice that the other two girls got closure in Mizuki's route, but nothing of Aeka was ever mentioned again in Nekoko's.

I hate Nekoko's ending simply for the fact that it uses a cheap emotional gimmick to make it seem more emotional.

I disliked Mizuki because she was a total bitch (and a LIAR, too), but I admit the last 5 minutes of her route are pretty amazing.

I like Aeka's route because I was able to connect with it on a personal level.

YMK is fairly good mainly because it deals with real life issues, albeit in a "very special episode" manner(like the doctor's anvilious comments about drug usage).

Except she's not supposed to be seen as a troubled girl, she's supposed to be seen as pure evil, a person with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever who deserves to die in the slowest and most horrible way possible. If you gave her a route and made her into an even potentially sympathetic character it would destroy a lot of Aeka's route, where you're supposed to develop a burning hatred for her so you go "OH FUCK YES FUCK YES WOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAHAHAHAHAHAH DIE BITCH DIE" during the strangulation scene at the end.

Well, thinking about it, maybe there was a plan to give her a route, but it was scrapped for the reasons outlined above (because her character had to be a one-dimensional 'evilest bitch ever' type for Aeka's story to work as well,) just as there was very obviously an imouto route planned that was scrapped.

What I didn't like about YMK is that your connection to the girls just seems so forced. You're mainly staying with them so they don't end up doing something stupid and killing themselves.

It's just that the game tried so hard to though SAD and DRAMA in your face that you had a hard time developing a real bond towards the characters. Instead of liking them because you wanted to it felt like you were liking them because you were obligated to.
