Unless you started it with a Touhou image, which judging by your post I would imagine not, I think you're either lying or getting really bent up about one or two posts. There are regular shmup threads on /v/, and in general they don't stray into Touhou much if at all.

Yeah, the first level is always a crapshoot. You need to use at least three suicide bombs on the boss to beat it in time, and it's way too easy to fail. After that level you don't really need to suicide bomb at all, since you can buy more characters that don't suck.

I made a video of the first level on medium difficulty. I died once at the end trying to finish the boss with a bomb, otherwise it's a pretty good run.

Genetos: One of the greatest freeware SHMUP games, in my opinion. The game starts you off in a "space invaders" type setting, and then transforms you and your weapons/sub weapons through shooters of the 80's and 90's until you reach modern day. Also it's probably the most emotional shooter I've ever played. Might be too easy on anything lower than hard if you're good at SHMUPS.

I game I am quite enjoying is eXceed3rd-JADE PENETRATE-BLACK PACKAGE which was released in C77. I downloaded it recently because I quite enjoyed the soundtrack (symph metal). It's like touhou in the sense that it is shump with girls but it is by no means a direct rip off. It's very enjoyable, difficult-ish but still easy (I have yet to 1cc it but I haven't been playing it as intently as I did when I first started playing touhou) and a bit short; there is an extra level but I haven't unlocked it and there is only one playable character.

Here's some footage of the first level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An0WM-CRC_8

Ray Force is an awesome, underappreciated game. definitely agree with you about Ray Crisis (Taito's shortest (under 15 min. to beat!) and worst shooter) but no, RayStorm is probably one of Taito's best shooters alongside Darius II.

I just can't get used to Raystorm. One guy shows up and shoots one bullet and I still can't dodge it because the perspective is insane. Shots getting bigger, my ship growing and shrinking as I move around, it just screws me up. Rayforce was great, even if the ship is way too slow, but then Raystorm ruined it. S'horrible.

Isn't the American version meant to be the harder one? Cave thought nobody outside Japan understand that the slowdown was intentional, so they got rid of it, and they didn't do anything to compensate. You just get faster bullets.

>> No.6179981

>>6179730
This was actually because CAVE thought that there was too much slowdown in the original version, hence making the game too easy.

This is true though, since Deathsmiles is pretty damn easy to begin with for a CAVE game.

I'd lean more toward improper configuration or your system simply not being moderately tweaked for performance (see: other system resource applications and/or services). My PC is rather old (mid-range for 4-5 years ago) and from the sounds of it, I have somewhat better performance in the same game on the same emu. I'd suggest opening task manager and finding anything hogging CPU that isn't essential and close it. Same for things using lots of memory, but that shouldn't matter too much in this case. Also, if you don't already, disable desktop compositioning (if you're playing on Vista/7) while gaming.

I understand where you're coming from. Rayforce was a true challenge compared to its successors. Though I like all games in the Ray series a whole fucking lot.

Also, fuck that boss. Though the theme is catchy.

And for those who like 3D shmups in the same vein as Rayforce, try Kamui. It's been compared to Raystorm but it's really closer to being a more extreme Rayforce.

There are quite a number of ships with very different shot types. After something like stage 2-3 you get a lot of pickups. On some of the 3-x stages you might even have 6+ floating around the screen. It is really not an R-Type or Gradius situation in my experience.

Gradius, I guess. Can't really say you're a shooter fan without having played a Gradius game, right? The second one and Gradius Gaiden are better than the first, but nowhere near as historic.
Dodonpachi is pretty simple but it does everything well, so that's always worth a look. Pretty easy if you aren't trying for big chains or the second loop, too, so it's somewhat accessible for new players too.
Mars Matrix is hard as hell but it has a lot of excellent ideas, so it's in. The recharging reflect barrier instead of bombs, the chaining making you zoom all over the screen grabbing cubes instead of just hiding at the bottom, the adaptive enemies, there's a lot of interesting shit going on.
Rayforce/storm/crisis have some good ideas too. No magic bullets which can hit tanks on the ground as easily as they can hit planes in the air in this one, you need to use your lock on lasers to hit them instead. Another game which keeps you moving, dancing all over the screen trying to lock on to things.
R-Type Delta's pretty damn good as an example of a slow shooter. It's not about dodging so much as just putting yourself in a position where you won't need to dodge. It's really slow, and it does demand you do a fair bit of memorisation, but I find the controllable bullet blocking gun pod to allow some nice strategies. Do you want it attached to your front or your back? Do you want to leave it floating free so it can use its different weapons and possibly slam into things? Real tactical.
And Touhous too obviously.

There are loads more, but I'll leave them to someone else. I'm not really an expert.
