Some restaurants have their menu in the main window (with the actual dishes) with numbers and can understand english numbers. And they can be somewhat cheap.

You could probably get away with learning a few phrases.

**** ga arimasuka? = do you have ****?
kore/sore kudasai = this/that please
ikura desuka? = how much?

Then ask them to show you the cost in western numerals, and use really basic English if there's any confusion.

Also, don't be afraid whenever you enter a store and the staff stop whatever they're doing to shout something at you. Chances are it's just IRASSHAIMASE!!!, which is a good thing.
