Its roughly accurate, except that CYOA books generally have branching routes (rather than 3 specific routes where the only branches off them are BAD ENDs).

On the other hand, other VNs can be different in this regard; Ever17 used its 5 routes as more of a "Run Lola Run"-style thing where each time things are subtly different and different clues are revealed to the reader.
