Dad was a top dog on a successful zaibatsu. Akiha inherited his position.

That said, the Tohno's did not have complete authority, but have to keep the board of directors and stock holders happy to maintain their position. This is a big part of why he acted the way he did when his son went all Rumia over the staff.

It was kind-of implied that the other leaders of the zaibatsu also descended from demon bloodlines, but it was left mostly vague.
