Don't vassal, OP, especially since the oldfag from that area gives all of your areas +1 NP when he reaches trust which is extremely useful. And try attack gourdless countries first that have characters you want. Miko's for Himiko/Natori, Dogs for Senhime etc. then push for Kenshin (making sure you abuse Rance autowin, of course). Once you get a handful of decent units the game becomes a breeze, sadly.

Suzaku is fine with me since you're at least given a choice of which unit to kill off. Nothing pisses me off more than having to save scum each turn because of the Shimazu brothers stealing your decent units. Although in saying that as long as I have Noir then I'm happy.

Not this guy but also during the last fight you'll notice that Xavier is level 99. Don't fret, you'll most likely get facerolled but each time you continue through Alice he loses 10 levels. You lose points each time you continue but that shouldn't be an issue since most people get zero points from their first game anyway.
