W list things that are almost canon in fanon while still being utterly false in real canon:
1) Alice is a fragile love-starved tsundere.
2) Alice's dolls have mind of their own.
3) Yukari has a kind, motherly heart.
4) Remilia is a good girl

...go on.

You know, while this kind of setting is most probably the most popular one it never quite clicked with me since it all seemed a bit too convenient.

Instead I tried turning it around. What if Sanae wasn't abandoned and found, rather she was taken? She's a "living god" instead of simply a human, and thus Kanako and Suwako might have decided that it would be better for her to raised by her won kind (gods) rather than by humans so that she could properly fulfill her purpose as living god to be reborn a god. Sanae might not even have met her real parents; and it explains why the whole "living god striving to become a true god" is something that seems so important to her.

Most/all characters interpretations are up to debate regarding whether they are "canonical" or not.

One could simplify and say that one the only canonical behavior a character posses can be seen within ZUN's own works; meaning that everything else that isn't is just as fanon. There will always be people claiming otherwise but in the end it's just word against word. Apart from very rare occasions, we don't know how the Touhous feel or how they reason. We only know ow they act, meaning any speculation regarding a character's feelings and/or reasoning (regardless of how logical they might seem) will always remain to be nothing but just that; speculation.

Elitists shouldn't be allowed to monopolize the "proper" characterizations of the Touhous and everyone should have equal respect to each other's work disregarding they actually feel about them emotionally.

Just saying.

On some levels, it's okay, but when you're basing it off your own personal interpretation of some information given, it's only meaningful to you. I can just as easily say, "She'd probably use it - as long as she keeps her previous magic hidden, it shouldn't really matter to her if she had autonomous dolls or not. Or she might use them, because the dolls don't reflect her own personal power, only her craftsmanship."

But there should be more weight to saying it's not possible, because it was more directly stated, and any idea of Alice hiding autonomous tech or such is purely user-formed, in that there's almost nothing else to support the idea she'd hide them in the first place.

But that's based off translations, and we don't know how good those are.

But if it were as simple as just having a link to say "well, it COULD happen", you could apply that to pretty much everything in the Touhouverse.

There's nothing really wrong with that, it's essentially the basis for most doujinshi, and it's nice in situation where there's just not enough info, and most of the info is left up to the individual person anyways.

I think the main problem in these sorts of topics are all the "probably" talk. In some of the better touhou discussions, people would just say their idea, no matter how farfetched, explain what parts of their idea contradict common beliefs and direct canon, and then describe it more in-depth really well.
