For ATI cards, anything above Radeon HD 5770 will perform well. Since, crossfired cards do not kick in when in windowed modes, the 5970 will not perform as well as the 5870 because it is two cards (5870) in one. For optimal ffxi performance, a Radeon HD 5870 would be sufficient. A vaporx version will run twice as cool, and with less noise, but is at least an extra $100.

I'm really wondering what sort of player population this game is going to have in its initial launch.

The idea of early entry for special edition users is already a bad idea considering there has been both alpha and beta prep stages already.

And then all the horrible reports of the Hardcore players being punished with this fatigue system.

I honestly can't see this gamer population getting that much bigger than 500k at best.

Unless I am mistaken that all the retards who bought FF XII and newer fantasies games are ready to jump on, but the difference especially between the traditional releases and the online game has never been further.

I was in the closed beta with a 2000 computer. Cities were pretty terrible, though you could still do whatever you needed. It wasn't bad when I was off on my own. Though its hard to tell just how much of the lag was from the actual game being slow, all the way down to the menus. It takes over 40 seconds just for all of the crafting menus to load.

The game engine is pretty terribly optimized, though maybe it'll be better in the open beta/release. It doesn't properly use multi-core CPUs and it also tries to murder your video card. People with top of the line cards were reporting ridiculous temperatures akin to GPU torture tests.

Well I was planning on playing this; I quit FFXI two years or so ago (and wasn't really playing much for the last year that I subscribed) so I wouldn't have had any burnout problems, and I already quit WoW after a little over a year of playing (Cataclysm actually motivated me to *quit* WoW).

Then I saw the system requirements, which now conveniently kill my motivation so I don't waste any time or money on it. Hell, I'm not even THINKING about playing it anymore.

Guess I'll go back to playing Atlantica when they finally fix the fucking font size; took a longer-than-expected break from it while playing Cosmic Break and Eien no Aselia and came back just in time for a major update that broke the font. I had been questioning whether I should even bother coming back to it if I was going to end up playing FFXIV but nevermind on that now.

Core 2 Duo OC @ 3.1ghz w/ 5770, 4gb RAM
Could run the game on low @ 30-45+ fps with shadows on low and other graphic options off. Lags in crowded and large areas. almost unplayable on high (and over) setting except on small areas. didn't notice much difference in switching resolution from 1080p to various lower windowed resolutions.

No, it isn't, and people are taking it way out of context. The fatigue/surplus system does not limit you to playing one class for 8 hours per week. It is not 8 hours of normal game time. It is 8 hours of earning a certain threshold of xp for one class, and then your xp gain begins to diminish.

However, any time you spend not gaining xp for that class (and likely within the threshold) will start recovering your fatigue. The weekly reset is simply there to assure you, no matter what you do, your fatigue will go back down.

It's NOT HOURS. It's a certain xp threshhold. There are 15 "tiers", built around the assumption that assumption that each one will take AROUND an hour to complete.

The first 8 tiers grant normal xp. After that point, each tier reduces xp gradually until it diminishes to nothing. Each "class" has its own set, so you can swap classes afterwards and receive full xp on it. Character xp does not reset with a class change though, so you are limited to a certain amount.

tl;dr: It still sucks, but none of you know how it works.

Its not really that bad and most people will probably never even hit it. you have 8 hours of 100% xp gain per class and then its starts diminishing and hits 0% at like 16 hours. However any time you are in a city, playing as another class or logged off it replenishes slowly and once a week guarantied it resets to max. and since you have to switch classes to harvest or craft and log off at night its unlikely it will affect any but the most hardcore.

Face it, it's a terrible design. Groups will have decided on the outcome prior to even starting, so they can get the desired loot table of a specific outcome. Yeah, that's some awesome story. Personally, I'd rather not even have it in-game as that will just get tedious.

Not too mention, that by Bioware's own admission, the group dynamics and encounters are designed with WoW in mind. Have you seen the group play videos? It was like watching WoW with lightsabers and blaster pistols instead of swords and bows and arrows.

I'm not knocking WoW's gameplay, but TOR is slated for 2011. I expect something new and fresh from this generation of MMO's. If I want to play WoW, I can already do that now.

If you're not in combat, you can switch weapons/tools. It's as simple as that.

You can make weapon swap macros so you can do it at the press of a button. If you're just switching between a combat class and DoL, you won't even need to bother adjusting your stats.

If you switch from a magician class to gathering and then want to switch back, you're fucked cause your max MP has been reduced by half or so in the meantime, forcing you to touch an aetherythe again.

Then you also have to re-equip all your skills again to your action bar (unless you made a previous macro with /eaction).

The whole "on the fly" concept is bullshit. It was faster for me to start crafting/gathering on XI than it is now on XIV.

Not even gonna talk about inventory issues, only 80 slots + 80 on that fucking slow retainer. Will most likely have to access your retainer everytime you want to switch job.

Was really looking forward to getting back into the game tonight and checking out Ul'dah and Gridania to figure out where I want to start in retail. I had initially planned to start in Gridania, but I really liked Limsa Lominsa; the screenshots did not do LL justice. Is this a decent score? Bench site says barely above "average" settings. core i5 750 @ 3.2ghz, radeon hd 4890, 8GB DDR3-1600, x-25m SSD, etc.

CPU barely went above 20-25% the entire demo so I assume it's mostly GPU bound. Oh well, I'll be getting a 5870 or something similar when the price drop from the 6000 series hits.

That happens when everyone starts playing. Most people won't get the headstart so they're going to get a relatively lag-free week of levelling. The next week will be laggy as hell so the people who didn't feel like shelling out 30 more bucks will get buttowned even harder.

That's what happened when I played Aion (except the headstart was only two days that time and you didn't need to pay more, just needed to preorder).

Pretty sure that will change with Cataclysm. They are gonna redesign boss encounters and stuff so you actually have to pay attention instead of mashing buttons. And judging from what I've seen in the new lvl 78 (normal) dungeons, shit's gonna be really hard. You should give it a try when it's out.
