Let's discuss Touhou music! So far I've figured out that the following are the most essentials after spending some time weeding out that lossy music collection, am I missing anything worthwhile here?

Alstroemeria Records
IOSYS
Alice's Emotion
IZMIZM
Demetori
IRON ATTACK
Cis-Trance
Aquaelie

I really like both Sekkenya and Iemitsu. You might want to check those out; they are pretty well known.

Sekkenya is mainly rock while their sister circle Zekkenya includes that plus some rock/folk fusion. Male vocals, some might not like but I think they're good.

Iemitsu is mainly electronic/pop but they've made a hiphop album as well. I might want to mention that it's really good.

Of course there's more; what kind of music do you like? Out of the circles you've been listening to, what did you like the most?

SOUND HOLIC are well-known but their overall quality is kinda meh in my eyes. You should know who they are though.

I prefer SWING HOLIC

OP also missed Innocent Key. I didn't like their earlier albums that much, but I did enjoy both their C78 and Reitaisai 7 releases. TouhouCeleb as a CD has some sort of weird charm to it. It mixes "lol so random" with "elegant and sexy" and it works strangely well.

I pretty much intended this thread for generic high-quality Touhou music recommendations (frankly most are shit and/or poorly produced/recorded), so my personal preferences really don't matter. Demetori, Alice's Emotion and Alstroemeria are my personal top3 if you wat to know.

I guess if you just took some random albums out of the torrent and listened I guess that would be your impression.

Of course a lot of it is bad, but the amount of it that is good is still large. This C78 I have downloaded practically everything to come out and I have enough above decent albums to make for many many hours of listening.

ALiCE'S EMOTION is hit or miss for me. I like Angel Rings and Lycoris, but despise Otonoishi and Chaos Flare.

minimum electric design is fairly recent but shows promise even if I didn't like the C78 album. Gensokyo Electronic Shoegazer and sanae telegraph show markings of a circle of making really good shit.

fromadistance is another circle that poked it's head out around the end of 2009 with eureka and released historie at C78. He also did two original songs on a web-released EP that were pretty good as well.

Well, something that is well known is well known for a reason, right? The chart could try and recommend a few circles per music genre, and then we'd try to cover both well-known circles and less known yet good circles.

We don't have that many, but we've had some past the few months. I just realized it might be good to make the chart more "Touhou general"; it would be an answer to all those "Hey guys what's Touhou teach me" threads, and it would recommend some music, some doujinshi some fangames and of course list the most important original works.

O-Life Japan (オーライフジャパン): almost nothing but pure instrumental gloriousness everywhere. If I recall correctly, the only vocal tracks they have are in the album with Reisen and the most recent album with Cirno. Even so, get all of their albums and enjoy.

Forest306: nothing but relaxing shit.

UI-70: their style varies a bit from album to album, but they're mostly awesome, so get them all. One of their latest albums had NOTHING but Phantom Ensemble arrangements, and that's amazing.

t=NODE: I have no idea of how to explain this circle, but they're just plain amazing in my opinion. Their albums sometimes have one or two vocal tracks at maximum (and they are hilarious vocals), so don't worry about that too much.

I really liked their first two CDs, but I found their C78 release (not the piano only album) to be disappointing. Is this just me?

The only track I really liked was the Green Eyed jealousy arrangement, and even if I found that track awesome it wasn't really enough to cover for the rest of the CD.

I still like them though. The Necrofantasia arrangement on their second CD is probably my favorite song by them. It's just gorgeous.

まらしぃ (Marasy): piano, glorious piano. You've heard of him.

君の美術館 (Kimino Museum): some pretty nice instrumental arrangements. Their C78 album had a... rock drama or something like that, and it was completely unrelated to Touhou.

I fucking love this album. It's deceptively complex and is unusually well mixed for a doujin album and is heavily layered, but I have trouble describing it outside of listing genres. Ambient techno, house, breakbeat, glitch, hardcore, dub, drum and bass, etc. I can't directly name an artist or album to describe the execution of the songs in question, so here's a small dose:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIKfCE8u8_g
Describing parts like 1:55 is hell for me since there is so much shit going on. Ambient drones, the leading melody, glitch, various beats and breaks, and shittons of other sounds that are along for the ride. It appears so simple while being densely layered. I'm embarrassed to admit that I have spent nearly 20 fucking minutes thinking of a description that didn't just involve name-dropping your typical big-name stock artists like Autechre, boards of canada, Cylob, Global Communication, The Orb, etc. since it would just me saying "It's ambient with beats hurr", and yet I'm doing it anyway. Songs on here unfold in ways that keep them fresh and interesting. It's like a striptease that takes off revealing clothes and then puts on other articles of clothing that are equally provocative (if not more).

Man, I am so going to get that job at Pitchfork one day.

I don't know. I listened to this album and wasn't convinced at all. I agree the vocals are probably the best part, but it's just messy, generic rock. I didn't hear the vocalist first on that album. I forget what the circle is, but コイヤミツキ features a couple of songs with her voice, a nice cutesy Koiiro Master Spark song and a really dark and well-sung Septette. Finding her on that album was just more Ichigo to enjoy, even if the rock itself was generic.
Even the generic rock Touhou covers are better than the horribad pretenses at trance or hardcore where it takes 2 minutes of a 5 minute song to get to the 30 seconds of music that sounds remotely similar to the Touhou track it's supposed to be emulating.

however other stuffs by them are kinda meh. Demetori's recent albums are getting better though. 黒夜葬 had some nice Alice arrangements and their booklets are sexy.

I kinda agree with you. Generic rock albums you can at least listen though once and go "well that wasn't horribad but not very exciting either" and then just move on to next album. I like listening chill-out occasionally and all that but some of the more lowtier albums can be frustration to listen though because they never end and nothing happens. Long build-ups can be nice, like what fromadistance did with a lot of the tracks on eureka; Alstroemeria can pull it off too but it's hard to get it right.

I have nothing against slow intros. Some can build up really well, like PASTRY's Moon Rise Again. It just seems like every techno-related Touhou doujin album needs every track to have excessively long intros and outros that aren't even that pleasant to listen to. After a while, I lose interest in listening and waiting around for Fuujin Shoujo cover #349578 to pick up.

Mainstream, but still unlikely topics for a band to center themselves upon.
A better example: Austrian Death Machine. A group composed of members of different metal bands got together because this one vocalist from one band did a funny Arnold Schwarzenegger impression. They produced an album with songs based on lines from his movies like "If it bleeds, we can kill it."
Never underestimate metalheads' determination to take something silly a long way.

Recommending ALTERNATIVE for their orchestra album Twilight Symphony and their chill out album Nocturnal Flight. I'm not sure if they've made anymore albums besides these, but I do think they belong in the collection of anyone who likes these genres.

Also ARA is good for more than chiptunes guys. Seriously check out Hobby Atelier Carrot Wine for:
Shangri-la Storm
東方オーケストラ Symphonic Quest I ~冥界の剣と紅魔の妹君~ (Be wary of the chiptune track. It has some really annoying sound effects)
麗 −RAY− 月天夜姫
悪魔嬢伝説レミリア ~運命の舞曲~
東方オーケストラ Symphonic Quest II ~屠られし者たち~ (Again be wary of chiptune)
東方発表会 第一部 -ピアノとアンサンブル-
Most are orchestrated and have some chill tracks here and there. The last is about half jazz half piano if I'm not mistaken.

Finally try Sensative Heart (a.k.a. koutaq) for some more chill out pieces. He released four albums and I enjoyed them all (save for 月射録 ~ The Moon-shooter which I thought was a bit bland, but I'd give it a try since it's just a half hour)

All of these can be found in the lossless/lossy torrents if I'm not mistaken.

That's the whole idea of progressive trance, the slow build up to the main melody is what defines the genre. Also, the reason for long intros/outros is because it's easier for DJs to mix a particular composition.

That's great that it has a purpose, but I still don't find it pleasant to listen to.
The intros and outros are by and large more repetition than build, and the part that I want to hear is often far too brief--often 45 seconds in a 5-7 minute song. Is it too much to ask for more than 1/5 of the song to be interesting?
A slow intro can be interesting and done well. I have found songs I enjoy that do that (as I said PASTRY does it well), but they're often in the dance genre. Each repetition of a few measures adds an element.

Progressive trance is by far the most popular electronic genre in doujin circles. It can be hit or miss most of the time, since it heavily relies on the progression of the melody and gradual addition of instruments, but the main idea behind all the repetition and slow build up is to put you into trance. There are some circles that do it really well making the whole track feel interesting, not just the climax part of the composition. I still think that older Alstroemeria or Sound Online arrangements for instance had some of the best prog trance in Touhou music.

>>6037446
I've praised Mohican Sandbag for their unique approach to music before. I love how this circle changes its style with each new album and still manages to keep their compositions fresh and interesting. From light, groovy, 80's rhythms mixed with Touhou down to the dark, raw psytrance tracks ending with some sort of an experimental music. It's sort of a mixture of various genres and it also shows what this circle is still capable of. Even the promo tracks are mini mixes instead of regular fade outs that other groups put out.
