Because the creators know they can milk money out of ronrey otaku. These things take like $10 to make, but they sell it at an extreme price because they know people will buy them at that price.

If you have the balls to do so, you can buy a plain cover and have one made at a silk screeners. Of course, I will admit it's a bit difficult finding a plain silky cover that feels like dakimakura covers. However, that doesn't mean they're using super expensive material, just nobody freaking manufactures the shit.

All of my dakimakura are cheap Chinese knockoffs. The quality is excellent, as well as the price.

The quality on the cheaper ones are pretty much the same as the expensive ones. I dunno if they're made of different material, but they seem to feel the same, and the colors aren't "washed" on the cheaper versions.

The Chinese just sell them for the price they're supposed to be. It's not like printed pieces of cloth are very expensive to produce. It's less work than making a shirt of pair of pants. It's just 2 rectangular pieces of cloth sewn together with a zipper added.

Just looked at some cheap $25 pillows on ebay and I can see why their cheap, not the manufacturing techniques, not the materials, or the labor, it's the picture; they look like some cheap, generic CGs a no-name put out to sell some pillows.

Yeah, they're legit. They have their main store in Akiba and a branch in Osaka. I've actually walked into both stores and ordered internationally from them on multiple occasions, although you might have to confirm by email and the site interface is a bit crude.

Mine cost about $135 shipped, but I'm so happy with the product I couldn't care less about its cost. And that's another thing--you need to buy one of a character dear to you. Yeah, this is a big problem with cheap ones on ebay. If you check up on it every month, you may find a really good one every now and then. Also, I believe a lot of the sellers allow custom designs. They're obviously a bit more, prices raises to about $40 for single side print at maybe $60 for double, but it's better than paying $100.

I got mine from a seller long ago, custom printed at a fine price. They no longer have their account open, but I just had to message them a bit on ebay and send them a hi res copy of the image I wanted.
