You have to make sets with your cards.
What I've figured out yet.

Each card exists only once.
As a beginner, always Pass, and wait until you can riichi.
Collect cards with the same stage number. Example: Byakuren, Kanako, Shikieiki 6 6 6 Murasa Marisa 4 4,
Collect cards that make a pair (move the mouse over a character to see the card needed to make a pair on the right). If you have 2 pairs, you have two cards left, discard the one with less possible cards to pair up with left. Sanae, Nitori, Marisa, Byakuren can pair up with lots of cards.
I haven't seen sequences work yet (1 2 3)
