OP here, here's how it works.

1. At the start, you don't have as much income as you think you do. Build slower. Build mostly irregulars, those are cheap. Don't build artillery, you can't afford it. Raise taxes and lower spending. Start researching that tech that boosts mining and farming by 50% (forgot which one, but it's one of the three required for Meiji Restoration).

2. Build a few transports.

3. Attack Korea. Slowly reinforce your army as much as you can with irregulars and infantry. Use your starting armies as well. Don't do this until you think you're ready (5 transports at least, ~20 armies including your starting ones).

4. Take over Korea. This is easy.

5. Your tech completes. You will suddenly have FUCKTONS OF MONEY.

6. Start building a lot of ships and armies, you'll need it, if only to boost your military score. For prestige, I just maxed my armies and did a 6-month humiliation war against China, killing ~300k troops or so until I was nearly out of soldiers... and then they accepted the humiliation peace, giving me all the prestige I needed.

7. Finish the required techs, spam Man-of-Wars for military power if needed. Meiji Restoration here we come (you should have 1M+ gold by now unless you have magical spending powers).

Good idea, I love being the one pushing those buttons.

The poor class pays most of the taxes in this game. Tax the poor to fuel your expenses, give the middle class a break so they'll become ambitious and try to promote to upper class, and don't tax the upper class at all so they can play snowball fights with their money.

Be a Jew, win at imperialism. Feels good man.

Start with the beginner tutorials, they're a little annoying but short and to the point.

Then play as a smallish but strong great/secondary powerful, the German states are good choices. Fiddle around with the assorted switches and buttons until you start having questions to ask.

Then find what you need in the intermediate and advanced tutorials; there aren't any good guides or a wiki yet but those sections serve pretty well.

Finally, play as an uncivilized nation and rise to be a global rape machine.

I don't think gold mines are (fully?) random. I started a new game as Austria 5-ish times in a row just to learn the ropes and struck gold in the same region at the same time.

But yeah, if you strike gold then that country is a keeper. Instead of providing you with goods which sell for a small amount of money, it just gives you a large amount of money instead which is factored directly into your balance sheet (gold is part of the budget window.)

I'm not sure. Trade goods rise and fall in prices, but I think pinning goods to gold prevents inflation. Before western paper money caught on in full, inflation just happened when coinage was debased - it was worth a smaller amount because it contained less gold.

At least in Vicky 1, that happens because of offer-demand relations in the World Market. In Vicky one, certain provinces changed RGOs through events, like getting precious metal where there was grain, but precious metal was just another commodity and didn't affect the income directly.

>> No.5997985

Ah.

I haven't played vic1, but in vic2 gold as a resource is treated directly as money - instead of harvesting a commodity it's raw cash.

There might be random events which change RGOs, but I haven't encountered them. I'm certain that any time I've seen gold come it was written in the scripts.

Is there a cutoff year at which the game spontaneously ends? I thought it was specifically the events of the 19th century but then I noticed techs you can't begin to research until the 20th.

My only complaint is that this game tries too hard to be a history book. If you went back in time and changed the course of empires' histories, then it would be perfectly feasible for given events to happen earlier than set dates.

Shit is as sandbox as sandbox can be without losing flavor. Nothing is set in stone and any existing event can happen if the conditions are right or not at all. It's about plausibility rather than fidelity.

>>5998032
I'm not sure; although it's all readable in the scripts there are a lot of them and I haven't found anyone else document this yet.

I only just started playing the game, but it looks like events are based on set conditions (what government/score/etc you have) and timelines (event can happen between years X and Y.)

Also a lot of events which might seem random clearly are not. By this point I'm sure there are a lot of pre-defined events that will happen no matter what; they're just part of your chosen country's challenge and strengths.

The thing that is so awesome about this game is that each country basically has its own loosely defined campaign. If you want to relax play as a great power, if you want a challenge play as an uncivilized nation.

Things to do in Victoria II:

1: play as UK and become a superpower; this isn't rigidly defined but just make it so that you cover the globe and great powers are no longer large enough to compete with you.

2: play as a German state and unite Germany. Alternatively, play as a 'civilized nation' level country and rise to great power status by uniting its own respective ethnic group.

3: play as Japan and rise to great power status by overcoming the nation-civilizing goal then conquering all of east Asia. Can be done similarly with any 'uncivilized nation' level country.

>> No.5998080

No, >>5998048 is wrong in saying that there are events that will always happen. It is different to vicky in that regard. They are like the events in EU3 or HoI3 with conditions and mean times to happen. The difference with the old style is the flexibility of conditions and times. There is, for example, no American civil war event - it's governed by the consciousness of pops. No Prusso-Austrian war, Franco-Prussian war, etc. A lot of it has been converted to decisions that you can enact when conditions are right.

I cant figure out factories for shit. None of mine would work, i found out i had only 25% of the cement and machine parts supplied for them to run smoothly.
So i went and built 10 cement and 10 machine factories, set them to maximum supply and nothing happened. They just did not work or got any supplies while my most of my facotires produced at 1/10 of their output. So that priority is useless. Okay, then i thought maybe tear down 3/4 of my facotories so that the supplies reach the cement and machine part facotires. Done that and only to see that the produce rate is going down from 100 cement and 30 machine to 10 and 0. And i have no fucking clue why. You cant even let the Ai do the building, it just makes factories, which will instantly close down because they get zero money from the state.
So i had to start from the beginning and make 10 cement and machine before 1850. The whole game went smooth and i outclassed England easily with a small country.

tl;dr build the two of them early and plenty or you run into a shit situation that your factories get no supplies and you can't change it anymore.

They all start out as secondary powers of more or less influence and might.
So they at least have the power of secondary powers, meaning that you don't start out as shit, yet they aren't great powers, so you aren't the most powerful there is from the beginning.

Also, they all have fun "missions" or goals rather such as creating Germany or uniting Scandinavia to one Nation.
Germany starts more or less in the middle of everything, and Scandinavia neighbours greatpowers such as Russia, The UK, and Prussia from the start, and also have, and is also next to the vast amounts water.

For some reason two members who could have easily destroyed me, Austria and Bugundy, accepted unity

>> No.5999137

The very first time I ever played Shogun Total war, I wasn't allt on bright on how to play.
I focused a lot on culture and technology, and less so on my actual armies, even though my armies were generally better equipped due to better technology.

So I managed to become the most sophisticated clan of Japan, yet my weak millitary policies soon found me trapped.
The weakest clan of all, previously my ally, was swayed by my greatest enemy, a clan who not only stole my ally, but who also had invaded and conquered my most precious island and territories.
Enraged by this sudden turn of events I at least managed to conquer my Ex-Ally, afterwards however my situation did not look good and I couldn't see how I were to relclaim my lost territories.
So regretfully I put all my efforts into forcing a peace treaty with my (all so hated) enemy in order to save what I had left.
Not long after that however I finally got my precious Geisha after I went higher and higher up in the tech tree.

"Hmm, geisha eh? Not bad considering what I was after was the tea house, let's see what this unit can do"
I moved my geisha in on that dreaded "ally" of mine.
Assassinated him, and then one turn later.
>My lord, the mighty 'clan leader' have fallen, and is without a heir, and it turns out that most of the people have searched their way to us, their most precious ally instead of falling to the class of petty rebels"
And thus I aquired more than half of entire Japan apperently, because I was their "most precious" "ally".
At that point I had practically won.
The dude I had assissinated apparently had the second most land of Japan, and combined with my land I became the strongest there was.
Also, as he had built up a decent millitary nation, combined with the tech I had available I easily became the strongest clan.
>most precious ally
Yeah right.

How does colonies work?

There is this whole "minimum liferating" requirement to be met when starting colonies.
But how does that work? I noticed how there was a tech under "chemistry" and "medicine" that lowered the minimum by 5.
I also noticed how there was some late culture tech that lowered it by a whole 10.

Yeah I was kind of pissed off how you can't inherit cores on different culture groups anymore with the beta patch. 50 years of overextension = fuckignsdfihaoasdas.
I managed to hold it together in the end though while still expanding. Not pictured is political control of eastern india from south to north because I forced Scandinavia to release most of India (which they controlled despite being babbies for manpower).

My recent attempt at rebuilding Rome. Best part of the game was watching the British clusterfuck. Great Britain was formed than lost everything to religious and other rebels and currently only controls London.
I wanted to free South American colonies but all the important cores are in Castile/Granada territory. So I freed Inca.

Whats even more rageworthy is that this mod has a divided Japan (its a bit shitty its possibly in early beta because it only has province names as nations, not clans and has generic troops "eastern horse archers" for example. Mahayana is also the main religion in Japan, not Shinto for some reason.) so I started out as one province Owari. After several failed attempts due to being an easy target for other provinces which held more than one territory I was finally able to take control of central Japan and from there began taking the required provinces to unite Japan.

It was looking a bit ominous when Korea landed, took Harima and Nagato and allied with one of my main rivals. Rebels forced them out eventually thankfully.

When I finally did declare a united Japan 1/3 of the country was still under the control of seperate nations.

Annexed Taiwan, conquered Korea, gained a border with Castile in Aceh to westernize, Ming collasped, Chu nearly reunited them, Mangalai khanate defeated and splintered them also annexed 90% of Manchu, inherited Champa, colonized Siberia, annexed north Indoc, defeated strong Pegu (had same tech as me) in west Indoc, annexed Hainan and Hong kong from the Kwangtong, defeated Mangalai and forced them out of North China and Machu, expanded colonies into Pacific Islands, prepared to invade southern China, saves freezes everytime it gets to the specific date of 25 March 1809.

To say i'm a pissed off after all that effort is an understatement.

I was thinking of doing that, but so much has happened in the last 10 years. Most of the pacific I control was gained during that time and it may or may not have been before I vassalised Shan. I also tried 5 years back and the problem happened even sooner.

I bet its because 90% of France including their Turkey holdings is under rebel control and mass defection is overloading the game or something

One of the things you need to watch out when you play Japan is Britannia.
Once you take over Siam and go down and take over Johore be sure to do it quick becuase relation with uk go down quickly and once they declare you need to be sure to have already have many guards and researched up until machine gun.
Get the same techs for attacking China, watch them drop in the 1000s while you lose 50 men or something. Take over most populated centers to get more Men so that you can take them all over. by 1880 you should have half of them conquered.

Be sure that they are not in the spere of influence of the ones you are attacking or somehow allied to them. If they aer in the sphere remove them and get them in your own, discredit them and so on.
Be sure to have high relations with the nations, allied and friendly to reduce backstabbing.
I tested it out and if you have some 100 points good relation they are less likely to attack you as if you had - or under 100. But that does not mean that someone random declares on you, just lowers the risk.
For example: I played Japan and took over Siam, my relation with britain was -15 and half in the war they declared on me and just mowed me down. I reloaded and waited 1 year or longer and got up to 100 and britain did not declare on my anymore.
But if you are a powerhouse and got high military and industry then you can be sure that no one will declare on you becuase they are shit scared.

Only the beginning is hard. once you have like 400 or 500 military points you are golden and no one will most likely touch you anymore. Even if you declare war on someone with allies they wont help them.

The only Nation you ever need to watch out for is Britain anyway, this could get a bit of nasty and draw out long and cost you men and resources that you might need someplace else. But most of the time they don't really care what is going on in europe, like in real life. Only their colonies they defend till the last. Or when you take possible future colonies from them they get angry.

Russia is a joke anyway they got too much of a big land and in all my games i took over moscow before i met any real fighting force. The only real reason why you dont take them over is that when you start with 400 stacks you will be down to 100 once you reach a bit past moscow. Get Poland and Minsk and some closer states from them and for the rest of the game just don't care about them anymore.

In Vicky 1 Australian either starts waaaaaaaay too late or is stuck with horrible circumstances. To give you an idea, by 1936 you pretty much have no national population (the crushing majority is made up of aborigines, witch number less than 500,000), so you can't do anything with the POPs. You are also way off the main immigration routes and it's not like your backwards population will let you easily reach democracy.
