Last Friday our teacher announced that we will be getting a Japanese exchange student in our class on Monday. That made me really happy, I'm really a big fan of the Japanese language. I was 6 years old when I for the first time saw a Japanese anime named "Dragonball". Time passed and I got more and more fascinated by the Japanese language.
When I was 10 years old first manga books where sold in the stores. From that time my biggest dream was to learn Japanese. Now I'm 18 years old going to high school in Sweden, I'm Half Norwegian and Half Polish (lived in Sweden now for about a year). I moved to Sweden because my parents made me to. I have never in my life(IRL) seen a Japanese person yet talked to one and this Monday a Japanese exchange student will be in our class.
It feels like a miracle has happened, she doesn't know English or Swedish.
My first mission will be to talk to her say some Japanese words and make her teach me Japanese of course.

Thats why I need some help from /jp/, could any one tell me how I just behave when I meet her? some tips? I'm afraid of that she might not want to talk to me because I'm Norwegian/Polish :s

I've been friends with Japanese exchange students over the course of a year, one of those friendships is still on going even though we're across the world from each other, and I've also had a student in my house.

The first thing is, if you do not know a lot of Japanese prepare to feel awkward. Doesn't really have to be complex, but if you can't say "Let's do x", "How/why/what/where/when", etc., then I don't think you'll get far.

Also, she is not there to teach you Japanese. That is one thing they did not count on doing when they signed up for the exchange program and indeed they shouldn't have to. If you two become friends and it just happens that's fine, but don't really push it too much. Besides, if you don't already know a bit of the language you won't be learning much from her anyway.

How do you know she doesn't know English? They will know a bit. EVERY Japanese student I've met (around 80, age range 15-18), could at least say a few things. But yeah...in general beyond that they were either very willing to speak but not so good...or not willing to speak and not good anyway.

When you just meet her for the love of god don't say something like はじめまして、私の名前はBobです。よろしくおねがいします!

Normally what I do is just the English equiv. of "Hey, I'm X, what's up?" Don't bow, don't eat in front of her with chopsticks, don't do 90% of the things you thought you should do. Just act like a normal person around her because really they aren't that different. What disenchanted me the most about Japanese students is when I met some I didn't like, yeah some people are unlikeable, I know right?

Good luck. She'll probably try to be really nice.

Gomenasai /jp/, my name is Ken-Sama.

I'm a 27 year old American Otaku. I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, God Hand)

I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer for Square Enix!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Japan!
