It basically works the same as Shkannon really, but eliminates the need for Shannon to crossdress because when we see the Kanon sprite it's actually her thinking he's doing it.
Was there any red against there being two people with the same name? If she build an imaginary Kanon with the same name as the actual one, he'd be considered at the same level as the actual one as much as Shannon is considered an actual person.

Genji and Kumasawa knew the truth about the baby and knew it had the split personality problem but they watched over them and made sure they were safe and well taken care of.

Shannon was Yasu's imaginary friend and kept him supported when he was down. Yasu decided he wanted to be a witch and "became" Beatrice. Beatrice and Shannon became different personalities. After Battler broke her heart Beatrice took Shannons love for Battler and created Kanon to fill the hole in her heart.

At that point Shannon and Kanon coexisted in each others minds. They took different shifts at the mansion. The only time they juggled being Shannon and Kanon at the same time was that night at the confrence.

Thats just kind of a quick overview, half of the story in episode 7 describes how everything takes place and why in great detail so I didn't really do it justice.

Sure is a lot of people misunderstanding Yasu in this thread. Chronotrig is totally right. There's no DID.

Here are my thoughts. Stuff that I'm theorizing will be marked.

- Yasu was born. The fall from the cliff happens. Genji and Nanjo manage to miraculously save the baby.
- Due to the severity of the injury, and being sickly to begin with, Yasu can easily be mistaken for someone younger than they are. Genji sets their "official" age to three years younger to avoid detection from Natsuhi and Kinzo.
- Genji places Yasu in the Fukuin House and gets her hired. He does so to basically see if Kinzo will notice the truth about Yasu without Yasu having to be under Kinzo's direct influence.
- When Yasu starts working, she has the physical and mental capacity of a SIX YEAR OLD.
- Natsuhi and Krauss speculated that Yasu was hired as a sort of live-in playmate for Jessica, who was lonely with no peers on the island, but Natsuhi rejects the idea her daughter playing with a servant, and not being able to choose her daughter's friends.
- Krauss wanted to tell Kinzo that Yasu was too young to hire, but Kinzo was in full batshit mode by this point, so there wasn't really anything that could be done about it.
- So they used her as a regular maid. In other words, work that is difficult for a full grown person to do was now being heaped on a six year old child.

- Kumasawa knows the truth about Yasu and finds her blaming Beatrice amusing. She thinks of it as Yasu's mother's spirit telling her daughter to keep an eye on her belongings. She also gets Yasu hooked on mystery novels.

- Battler and Yasu get along very well, probably the best in the group. They love to talk about mysteries with one another. That year, Battler utters the infamous "I'll come to get you on a white horse" line, and Yasu falls head over heels.

- Yasu starts seeing more and more of Claire-Beatrice, who encourages flights of fancy regarding Battler and what their life could possibly be like. In other words, Yasu is indulging in fantasies.
- Yes, we all know what happens. Asumu dies, Battler cries, ect, ect.
- Yasu waits for three years. The scene with the letters happens, and Yasu's faith is finally completely shattered.
- There is a scene with Claire-Beatrice where she apologizes for encouraging Yasu's flights of fancy.
- I think it's important to note that Yasu isn't bitter or angry towards anyone over this. She's just hurt.
- Yasu "gives" Claire-Beatrice her feelings for Battler and then "remakes" Beatrice to better suit Battler's ideal girl in looks. Once again, Beatrice acts as a sort of, hmmm, closet for things that Yasu values but wants to move on from. Things she's outgrown. Or dreams that won't come to anything.
- Beatrice now encourages Yasu to move on. To assist in doing so, she's giving Yasu a little brother.

SPECULATION: I think Yasu is intersex. Also, Yasu is about thirteen (or sixteen) right now, which means puberty and hormones. I think Kanon is a response to that. He represents another option for Yasu. Yasu can be female (Shannon) or male (Kanon) and find happiness either way.

SPECULATION CONT: Since Nanjo, Kumasawa, and Genji know about any condition Yasu has, I think they would be understanding and helpful if Yasu wants to sort of see which gender they like better. Yasu also didn't instigate the romantic relationships between George and Jessica respectively, so I don't think they were using the cousins per say.
Under this speculation, Shannon and Kanon aren't personalities, they're just ways of acting. Yasu acting as boy? Kanon. Yasu acting as a girl? Shannon. In fact, I think Shannon and Kanon make better sense if you take them to be one person, but I know a lot of people disagree and prefer DID. Just my opinion. Moving on.

- "Shannon" and "Kanon" end up in relationships (some to stronger degrees than others) cultivated by the cousins. Yasu's gender will be decided by whichever s/he loves most. All seems to be going pretty well.

- THIS is where everything comes crashing down on her head, and what makes me think multiple personalities aren't really a part of it.
1. When she finds the gold, she's still "talking" like Beatrice, but when Genji appears and actually calls her Beatrice, that stops and she reverts to her normal way of speaking.
2. She becomes hesitant and confused.
3. She says "I wasn't Beatrice" to herself.
4. Finally, she starts speaking in a totally gender-neutral way. This is the same way we see her talk in the Lambda TIP, btw. "Jibun" instead of "warawa", "watashi" or "boku".

SPECULATION: Yasu believed that s/he could become what s/he wanted. Instead, s/he finds out that s/he is "Beatrice". All other options don't really have any meaning for Yasu any more. The door on those futures have been closed and Yasu's fate has been decided.
But "Beatrice" to Yasu is an anagram of things that don't really exist and are impossible. Therefore, I don't think Yasu exists to him/herself any more. Or rather, Yasu has to face him/herself without someone to pretend to be. I think this is where the scene with him screaming comes in.
Yasu wanted things to continue on as normal, and probably would have eventually stabilized, but then Battler throws the final wrench in.

- In any case, whatever happened, the Yasu we meet in the Tea Party probably isn't sane. The only motivation they give is wanting to create an interesting murder mystery. There is nothing about a pony. Nothing about Battler. They obviously don't hate the parents or blame them for any suffering. They're just dead on the inside. Why? Well, we don't know.

This is just purely speculation, but there are a few things that jump out at me.

1. Claire (aka, the core of Yasu) is portrayed as being onstage, like an actress. I think this indicates someone who liked to play roles, as opposed to someone who saw themselves as being other people.

2. I think the reason Battler fucked everything up by coming back when he did wasn't because Yasu wanted to jump his bones.
- Battler coming back was "impossible" to Yasu. That's why those feelings were put aside, they were "impossible" to fulfill.
- If Battler had come back a year earlier, that would have been before Yasu solved the epitaph and had been mentally unbalanced by "impossible things happening".
- If Battler had come back a year later, Yasu would have reached an equilibrium and probably have been married to George as Shannon (female). Or, if the romance had failed due to PEEN, he would have reached equilibrium as Kanon (male).

3. I don't always agree with Chronotrig, but I think he's right about Yasu. We don't know everything there is to know about him/her. In fact, the time Yasu really ressonates the most is at the very end of her flashback. It feels like all the layers are stripped away, and we're left seeing the core of someone.

4. I think Yasu and Leon are similar in one key respect. They are mirrors for others to project upon, except, with Leon it's just his gender. Yasu, on the other hand...
Yasu reacts to other people's expectations and molds herself to them. Shannon is ideal for George. She always knows the right thing to say. Kanon brings out the best in Jessica. But, I think only Battler brought out the Leon in Yasu. The scenes with them talking about mysteries was another scene where I felt like we were looking at Yasu as a complete person.

I just reread the last part of the flashback again. Here are a few things I noticed that slipped past me earlier. They do change a few things, but not much.

References to Battler:
- Yasu says, as Beatrice, that she doesn't want the gold or money. All she wants is for "him" to come back.
- She also says that she wants everything to continue on as it was, because she wants to continue waiting.

Now here's the odd thing. Yasu's layers have definitely been peeled back. This is who s/he really is, and all pretenses are swept aside as she navigates through this uncertain situation. Several times, she mentions that Beatrice was a illusion of hers, meaning she knows that she was playing a part.

But overall, at the very end, Yasu seems confused and bewildered and a little unnerved, but not unhappy. She reiterates more than once that she's happy to have found out this information. She thanks Genji, Nanjo, and Kumasawa.

But the MOST important part: She is okay with Battler NOT coming back. She wants him to, but is also willing to wait and have these peaceful days continue on indefinitely. Heck, earlier in the flashback, she described her feelings for Battler as sort of wistful twinges, but nothing rehabilitating.

So, where does the Yasu we see in the Tea Party come in? Seriously, wtf happened? Anyone have any idea? Am I to assume that this is Beato's last attempt to pretty up a bad situation? Did Yasu explode after learning "everything"?

Will didn't have a chance to explore the last two. Claire ended her "confession" with the scene where Yasu tells everyone thank you, but she wants Krauss to act as head and everything continue the way it was. Will then killed her and meta-everyone left the chapel.

In the Tea Party, we do have Shannon accepting George's proposal for the billionth time, but Shannon is really, really clear that if it came down between Battler and George, she'd choose George. I guess if you go by DID, then that might have set Yasu off, but something doesn't seem right to me...
