Damage is also increased by around 50% and bosses use their abilities more often. Try fighting Baal normaly and on /players 8 and you'll notice the difference.

No, MedianXL had a complete reworking of skills, shit like that is pretty common. Area spells are pretty common since it also increases the number of enemies on screen.
Some people like the alternate approach, some think it's just clutter.
