Rare, I've only known 2 Black Otakus, and they were interested solely in shoujo and more main-stream stuff, although they did a fair amount of research in to Japanese culture to know enough.

Pretty much this. We are damned good at hiding power levels. My coworkers would be shitshocked to know that I collect a large amount of doujin and figures. My one moment of showing my interest involved me playing EOSD while on lunch break while mu boss watched in awe at what I was playing.

Black people don't have that stratification into nerds and non nerds and cool kids and so on. Because of that, they can take it easy and like whatever they want. It's also impossible for a black person to look uncool doing anything, thanks to the media. Also not many WWII vets in their family, since they weren't thought of as any better than the Japs back then.

But then that just goes for anime, even though its fair to say a large amount are into at least the anime that comes on TV, and many more are at least open to it.

As far as the incidence of fig collectors and stuff, no idea.
