Okay, first of all, tarantulas have been house pets for a long time, and actually make good pets if treated well, similar to snakes.
Second, yes, they're mostly harmless, although their bite still hurts like a bitch.
It's not edgy, you're just overly sensitive.

Aside from the Goliath Birdeater (Theraphosa species) who needs swamp-like conditions to thrive, I consider them lower maintenance than a house plant. Very simple to keep. The ones capable of putting you in the hospital are from the Old World (Africa, Asia, Australia). A bite from one might be one of the most painful experiences in your life, but you won't die.

The hobby is fairly large, and there's a lot of resources online if you're interested.

Depends on species, supply and demand. Number of offspring can vary from 30 to 2000. Some spiderlings will fetch $100 per individual, but the cost associated with getting the parents is rather high and success with the rare species is few and far between even for experienced keepers. Poecilotheria metallica, Monocentropus balfouri, Pamphobeteus species, Megaphobema robustum. Hard to breed, but you could potentially make a few thousand from one sac.

For more common and easy to breed species, a couple hundred is the norm. If you get 1000 babies from something like a Lasiodora parahybana (Salmon Pink Birdeater), you can sell each for $5.

It's not profitable and you won't make a living off of it, but it can supplement your income nicely.

There is an arachnid hobbyist community. You can put them up on classifieds. People will buy them. The common species just might take a while to sell off, like the spiders who produce 2000 babies per sac.

Hey Spideranon,

Just thought I'd give you a thumbs up. I love spiders, and i used to be a fanatic about them decades ago when i was a kid. Seeing these pictures brought back the memories of pouring over books in search of more morsels of knowledge about the wonderful things. Also, I was greatly depressed when a friend of mine killed my resident house spider. It was about 3 inches in diameter... I would sometimes leave the door open so a few extra bugs would get in for him...

I trap house spiders and flush them down the toilet.
I light a lighter under one that's descending down a single thread and watch it burn up.
