ATTENTION FAGGOTS:

The entire reason why touhou works the way it does is because it is in 2D. If you wanted to use genuine 3D space then it would be a tradeoff between having far more space in between shots making them easier to dodge, and having a hard time accurately judging trajectory of shots from not having a bird's eye view of them.

Both of these things would make a game less enjoyable, playing such a game on a tinyfuck DS screen with a stylus would just be flat out retarded.

I thought about this extensively myself, for years on end. I eventually came to the conclusion that the only way to make good danmaku patterns in 3D space was to effectively flip the player's line of sight so that you were staring straight down at the enemy instead of viewing the entire scene from a bird's eye view.

In other words, the player would still move in 4 directions; you'd move up and down instead of forward and backward. Not only that but you would need much greater CPU power per-shot, as well as needing many more shots, so essentially you'd have to make due with less overall. This would mean fewer shots on the screen, which would make it really difficult to challenge the player.

There is also another problem with 3D; if the shots themselves existed in true 3D then it would be impossible to give a clear view of all the shots. Touhou skills largely revolve around being able to track the motion on everything on the field, which becomes impossible if much of it is being hidden from sight.
