If you have the money, what's the problem? By all means, it's much cheaper than taking a lang class at an institute, and less hassle than a course at a jr college.

This is a pretty good book. I went through it back when I was in 1st year and it served me pretty well. It gives you a pretty good base to learn by youself with.

haha other people don't know how to learn Japanese

I've finished Genki 1, Genki 2, Japanese the Spoken Language and Yookoso, and I must say that while they all have their good points, Genki is superior.

Me know Japanese good now...Feels good man.

Two full years of formal studying, an indefinite amount left to go because it's largely been useless for understanding spoken Japanese. And I have no initiative to consider learning by myself. Feels good man.

We have these threads all the time but I guess it's alright cause there are always new people starting nihongo and want to share this with us lol.

It's an interesting language in and of itself, much more logical than english.

Well that's not a long vowel, that's someone holding what they're saying. Think of it phonetically.

They do it all the time in blogs. 〜 and fairly common as well. So is ーっ. So are those crazy smiley faces that are impossible to decipher.

I took 3 years of Japanese in high school back in the day.

I picked up the basics and failed at Kanji. I would only have been able to have an incredibly stilted conversation with a Japanese person.

Fast Forward to the present. Years of watching anime have supplemented the original Japanese lessons allowing me to understand most Japanese and speak in passable Japanese. But I can't read it for beans because of kanji. FUCK YOU KANJI.

So what I'm trying to say is, once you get the basics, if all you care about is reading/speaking, anime can teach you if you're not stupid. But uh, watch more of the high falutin animes.

(Assuming English.) I would have to agree. Japanese is *so* much easier to learn them English.

Rain for blaming, wind for cursing
Even snow and summer heat for envying
With strong square chin, desire is neverending
Never shutting up, loudly always shouting
Four bowls of sorghum, a lot of kimchi, a bit of gochujang a day
Money minded on everything around trying not to pay
Feeling understanding with halfway experience, in a second memory disappears
In that peninsula, by the bare mountain, from small thatched shack it appears
Finding out Takeshima in east sea, it's there to thrust a flag acting big ugly
To master in west, it's there to pay respects willingly
To dying Viet Cong in south, it's there with a gun to tell not to be scared and kill them with smiling face
To brother in north with drought and famine, it's there with modesty to pass them Japanese rice
Ordering apology for drought and reparation for summer cold
All over the world, skunk zombie is what it's called
Got no praise ever
Got no respect ever
Just like that, I've already been ever

I actually watched no anime back in my high school days since we didn't have them newfangled internets back in those days. I just didn't want to take Spanish for my foreign language and the only other language was Japanese. Or...French. Pass on French too.

It's actually a beautiful and intricate language that allows incredible layers of complexity no retarded barbarian like you with you dry and crude clusterfuck of words called "English" could ever grasp. I never saw a foreigner who wasn't raised here use it correctly. They all sound like Google Translate.
