Hiragana is easy.
Katakana is easy (but takes a little more time...not used as often. Especially weird characters like "wa" and the like)

Kanji --> Still need to find the most effective way to learn this on my own.
How effective is Heisig's method if I'm already (slowly) learning kanji in class? I dont think it should be detrimental, but who knows

If you spend an hour or two a day you'll be done with the joyo kanji in roughly 3-4 months, depending on how well you learn. After that the kanji part of your class will be cake and you'll laugh at all those poor bastards who try to remember kanji with rote.
How many kanji do you know already? Then again it doesn't really matter, just go on with Heisig until you're done which won't take that long anyway. If you really want to you could pick out the kanji from your class and learn them earlier than they would appear if you went with the Heisig order, but if that's too many I wouldn't bother and just go from start to finish.

>> No.59412

awesome, thanks for the input.
The reason I ask is because it said in the book that it's probably detrimental to learn the it along with in class...

I really like his imaginative way of learning. It goes along REALLY well with how I was trying to learn anyway, but there's actually a logical way to do it now.

I'm supposed to know 145 up to now. And I do, for the most part. I can read them. Writing them might be tougher. But I would love to just learn the kanji...and then book 2, learn the actual vocab for it, and then in class put the two together and use them.

I think he meant it's suboptimal to do it the "Heisig way", because you're supposed to do it at your own pace, but I haven't read the introduction for some time so I could be wrong.
Then again I don't see how it would interfere with your own studies. You probably learn only a few kanji a week anyway.
If you reall want to do RTK (I can only recommend it) check out http://kanji.koohii.com/.. It has a nice review program especially made for RTK and many user stories for the later kanji where Heisig doesn't provide any stories. I use it myself and it's great.

Ooh OK, that makes perfect sense. I do remember him saying something like "this book is clearly designed for self-study" blah blah blah.

I'm glad to get that cleared up. Now I won't be worried about studying on my own, without screwing up my grades. Awesome site, by the way.

I got a huge boost of motivation to all of a sudden just...enhance my Japanese learning on my own because last night I won our University's Japanese Speech Contest (well...for the first year students at least. I wasn't against the grad students etc.)

I just have a feeling I could be learning so much more at the same time.

>> No.59720

>>59596
I felt the same when I started and I think those classes will only make you more motivated beacuse you'll probably end up wanting to reach all those kanji you already know to enhance your knowlege. You'll ace all those kanji tests. I guarantee it.
But don't get me wrong. It's still hard work, it takes patience and you have to keep the ball rolling.
Oh and here's the full book if you don't have it already: http://d845970.u25.fohdeesha.com/rtk1.pdf..
You might want to buy a hardcopy though, but I didn't bother since it works fine for me. YMMV.
