I don't usually come here. I've been on /a/ for the past 2 years and have occasionally seen this character and the game Touhou discussed.
After hearing about it from these boards so much I decided I'm going to play this game(I hear it has a great soundtrack as well).

So I ask you, what kind of game is it and where should I start?
Should I torrent something specific?

Don't bother with the main games. Just immerse yourself in the fanon and fan games.

Touhou games are pretty average shmups. They're generally enjoyable if you enjoy the genre but you'll be disappointed if you're expecting something groundbreaking. Most of the people who discuss Touhou talk about the characters (how fans see the character, the actual canon is basically just "hey I'm defending this place").

If you don't enjoy shmups, just forget about it now.

No, you guys are doing it wrong, start with 1 like a G, that way you work your way up the difficulties, and build up your dodging techniques slowly.

Start with game 6, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil(Tip: Type "Touhou 6" into the pirate bay for an english version all you have to do is extract) with a retexture mod. Or Touhou 7(Perfect cherry blossom).

Also, real men don't use mods to hack the game and make their hitbox visible(It's pretty much where the belt would be on your characters) and keep the original sound files.

Oh, and you might not enjoy the games if you don't like shmups.

Forgot to mention, Play Hisouten, the 10.5th game in the series, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody. It's a very fun fighter(Not like the other games in the series) and is worth playing.

Start with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil on Lunatic and NEVER play in any other mode.
When you're able to get past Sakuya any other Touhou game will become mundane.

Easily discernible fact: 10 times out of 10 if you ask how to start with Touhou the advice will be trolling. Just keep this in mind and follow your heart.
