OKk first time in /jp/

I want to learn a reasonable amount of japanese for when i go there by myself in 5 months.

I got rosetta stone and have been spending approx 1 hour a night on it for the past 5 days since i got it. My aim at the moment is to learn the spoken language but i'm not super interested in written, perhaps later, but for now i don't have the time.

So has anyone used rosetta stone? It seems very good.

My main question however is whether you think i'd be better off learning the language with romaji or what i am currently doing which is with hiragana and katakana displayed though i'm not really taking it in.
The main problem i can see with using romaji to learn is that i will always see english characters rather than listening to the actual words.

Any thoughts?

>> No.5838612

>>5838593
You are fucking retarded for several reasons.

1. Rosetta Stone.
2. It took me what, 2 hours over 2 days to learn Hiragana and Katakana. Why learn a language in the first place if you're going to do a half-assed attempt at it?
3. Learning set phrases is about the last thing you should ever ever ever ever ever ever ever do when learning any language.
4. http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar

What you are going to do is worthless. You need to learn how to read, write, and speak to fully understand it. This isn't some piss simple language like Spanish. Japanese is a tough language to learn. Though with 5 months and only 1 hour a night, you're pretty screwed. Have fun sounding like a retard

I tried German on Rosetta Stone and it's pretty good for speaking and memorising vocab.

Romaji is a good entry point until you get to the part where you are well versed enough with basic grammar to go on to writing kanji + hiragana.

Lots of words are pronounced the same so unless you know the kanji, romaji is as good as just hiragana alone.

Katakana is used for loanwords and stuff so you can study that seperately.

>> No.5838644

In ANY self-respecting Japanese class, the first thing you are going to learn is Hiragana and Katakana. If you can't even do that, I feel sad for you, as you are way too retarded to ever be able to learn Japanese.

Ok i know that you're going to rage no matter what i say so i'm not sure why i am bothering for the likes of you, however:

1. Rosetta Stone... Explain please... is there something wrong with this program?

2. Why would i want to half arsed learn a language? because i'm going there for a holiday and want to be able to get myself out of trouble if required, and i certainly do not have the time to put in more than i am already.

3. Ok, well you obviously don't know the program as it does not teach set phrases.

The only thing Rosetta Stone is good for is pronunciation and vocab. Seriously. It teaches completely gaijin-ized Japanese grammar with all kinds of useless pronouns. It might be good for Spanish, German, whatever, but at Japanese it almost completely fails. I was very disappointed.

Please learn hiragana and katakana. My professor forced us to learn hiragana THE VERY FIRST WEEK of class, ending with an exam on hiragana that you had to pass to stay in the class. Know what? The majority of the class passed. Because it's fucking easy. You will have a better time in Japan and absorb more of the culture while you're there if you can at least read some signs/menus. :/

not too bad, just starting to get serious. 600-800 kanji, somewhere in there, decent grammar, and new vocab every day. It sucked ass before i found a real way to learn.

Care to elaborate? Right now I'm at 150-200 kanji, no problems with vocabulary. Learning kanji is kind of the downer, for now.

What the hell are people talking about when they say they've learnex X number of kanji? All the Kun-readings? How to write them? All the On-readings? The broad English meanings of the kanji? You know the latter two are utterly useless for acquiring new vocabulary, right?

RTK is giving this board serious brain damage.

I've studied Japanese and lived in Japan.

Personally, my advice is to learn Katakana and Hirogana and then fuck Kanji. Katakana is useful for a lot of things like menus and signs. Hirogana is kinda useless without kanji since it's only used for grammar but it's easy to learn. But Kanji just sucks up all of your study time when you could be learning how to speak.

Actually, knowing the broad meaning of the kanji can help with vocabulary at times, so it's not "utterly" useless. But yeah, Heisig is shit.

Why people always say you should STUDY kanji, right after you learned hiragana and katakana? Dammit, even if you knew the full meaning of each kanji, if you see two kanji together forming a word in a phrase you probably won't understand shit of what is written. You should study vocabulary and write down the kanji of the words and only after a while, bother studying the kanji.

People usually learn Kanji along with grammar and vocabulary at the same time, not one after the other.

Anyone here actually use remembering the kanji to be fluent?

I used it for a while, got up to about 500 and quit because although I remembered the kanji, I couldn't really apply to anything and I got bored. It seems really effective though but it's brutal to force yourself through it. I still remember most of them, even though it doesn't do me any good at the moment.

That's why I said people should prioritize the study of vocabulary (including writing words that use kanji) instead of the study of kanji meanings alone.
