How do I stop sucking at Touhou?
EoSD, can't get past Meiling on normal :(

Not using emoticons would probably improve your game significantly. Also, learn to bomb.

Play on lunatic always. Also, hold shift to focus for more damage, slower movement, and a viewable hitbox.

Keep trying. I eventually got to the last spell card red magic on normal.

Don't know how these people beat the EX bosses with no bombs though. Even spells like meilings mid point spell are tough.

I can get up to Remilia, no idea how far into her spellcards. I reckon I could complete it if I didn't die and waste my bombs.

Don't play for hours on end
Take breaks. Your fingers and mind need rest.
Drink plenty of water

Identify which bullets aren't and are aimed at you. The latter can be dodged by simple tapping a (logical) direction.
Always remember to bomb, especially if you're feeling under pressure.
Use practice mode. The more you practice the earlier stages the more lives you'll have to clear the later ones.
Don't play on easy mode if you actually want to get good.
Don't concentrate solely on the area of your character. You should be looking at various areas of the screen depending on where it needs your attention. This should come naturally.
Are you trying different characters and shot types?
Don't just stick to one game. Playing other bullet hell games (not just Touhou) can help develop skills, tricks and increase your twitch-dodging reactions.
Learn the layout of the stages. You can cut out a lot of enemy projectiles during the stage portion if you already know where the enemies will spawn,
If you're using a narrow shot type, don't fuck about lingering at the bottom not following the boss - you're not doing any damage and you're just prolonging the length of the spell card, which just means you're more likely to get hit.
Don't expect to be good quickly. Anything needs times to develop, and some people need more time than others. If you're getting frustrated or your patience is wearing thin, it's time to stop playing for now.

Off the top of my head. So it's not in any order.

EoSD is a good game to start with. A lot of the cards are twitch based and not being able to see your hitbox (unless you're using optional patches, you pussy) will mean you won't rely too much on it. Rather, you'll gain a sense of where you are and where the hitbox much better and you can focus on the bullets instead.

And:
>:(
Stop doing that.

Now Godspeed, anonymous. Never give up.

>not being able to see your hitbox

While that may be true, it takes an absurdly short amount of time to realize that the hitbox for both characters is the big fucking bow on their backs. Knowing where the hitbox is when unfocused helps a lot, especially later when focused movement tends to hinder your dodging skills.

If you want as many chances as you can get, you also have to care about scoring a bit since EoSD's reward system relies entirely on your score. First and second lives after 1 billion (or 100 million, I forget) each, and each successive Extend requires double your previous benchmark...so utilize the Point of Collection whenever it's available. It'll also help you become more aware of the playing field since it's pretty high up on the screen and it might take a bit for you to reach it if you're just hugging the bottom. Not something I'd focus on in the beginning, but in some of the early levels try to stay towards the top and get a feel for using the whole screen instead of just using the bottom.

Meiling's cards are only confusing because of her spinning bullets...you'll get used to it, but every time I face her I end up getting pretty dizzy trying to follow her patterns.

Good luck once you get past her and move on to Patchouli.

>>5809938
That's assuming you know what a hitbox is supposed to look like. When I started playing I had no idea it covered such a small part of the sprite and it took me about a week to realize the only vulnerable place was the middle of their backs right below the head.

I played IN before EoSD when I first got the game for the fun of it...when I hit shift I was wondering what the white dot was on my character, and realized it was the hitbox. Then I played EoSD and focused...WHAT THE FUCK WHERE'S THE LITTLE WHITE DOT

Listen to >>5807767

Watching other people's replays helped me quite a bit. I started playing last month; haven't been able to beat Remilia yet. I had a great run on Meiling once (no lives lost/no bombs), but it was only a practice run and I couldn't save it.

Also, it helps to play other Touhous in between. PCB is a bit easier in comparison.

>First and second lives after 1 billion (or 100 million, I forget) each, and each successive Extend requires double your previous benchmark
It's 10, 20, 40, and 60 million, and honestly, you should get all of the extends in a normal game with just a few very basic scoring techniques that don't hurt your chances of clearing at all.

Kefit's unfocused lunatic playthrough of EoSD is one of the first replays I watched when starting touhou and it has really helped me out in the long run I'd say. His pain scream is also really loud. One of the main things it showed me was how to do Non-Directional Laser right as well as other miscellaneous things like going the top part of the screen for stage 5.
