/jp/, what is your favorite Touhou game and why.

Mine is Imperishable Night. Every boss (except Wriggle) is memorable and fun. Spellcard practice is a huge convenience and unlockable cards adds lots of replay value. Last cards are a great mechanic. I found the familiars and human/youkai mechanic to be fun. Whereas the faith and communication meters in MoF and SA were huge hassles, and those fucking UFOs always seem to dick you over, switching between human and youkai to maximize time points was very enjoyable. Especially since it requires a minimum of memorization (you can see if something will spawn familiars, there is never anything like in UFO where some fucking creatures always drop the same color UFO and it never changes color so you have to remember it). IN is also the first game that always lets you collect at the top without having full power.

On the downside, IN's soundtrack is, IMO, the least memorable of any Windows Touhou game. Hell, my two favorite songs from it are actually just repeats of songs Zun made for other Touhou games. Oh, and overall it's probably the easiest Touhou game, but some of those unlockable spellcards more than make up for it.

What, I'm not trolling. I mean, its soundtrack is still fine and it suits the game, but compared to the other Touhou games I found it a lot more subdued and unmemorable.

While it is your opinion, I'll have to disagree. IN had the least amount of ZUN trumpets and all of them smoothly fit the boss they were applied to.

>Oh, and overall it's probably the easiest Touhou game
Probably why people suggest IN as their starter Touhou game.

Also personal nostalgia for being the first I played.

I'd definitely have to say the best overall game is PCB though.

EoSD is good but kind of clunky compared to the other games and I play MoF for the pretty backgrounds even if the game is rather lacking.
MS is pretty good too.

Mountain of Faith. Because it has the best mechanics, characters, music, spellcards, and the most fun.

And it has The Gensokyo the Gods Loved, ZUN's musical magnum opus.

I do as well. It has a great stage 1 theme that I would only put behind UFO's.

As for me I have to say MOF. It was the first Touhou shooter that I really devouted some time to mainly because of falling in love with the atmosphere and fitting music. I'm probably also the only one who actually liked the faith meter as I felt it made the game a little more hectic by making me feel like some sort of point junkie. And an idiot by grazing for no apparent reason

PCB is still definitely a close second.

While MoF had a lot of things going for it, did you really enjoy the faith meter?

I also personally disliked the change from distinct bombs to using power. SA did it OK because power was decently hard to get and you didn't get to store above your shot limit, but in MoF there are many, many times where using a bomb would literally both regenerate itself instantly with power items and also earn you more points due to point items. I just don't like when you can earn more points bomb spamming than by actually dodging.

I also thought Wriggle was tedious and not fun at all.

I like MoF the most. The player character's attacks are the most satisfying and I love the cast.

Definitely like UFO's music the best though, especially Stages 2 and 3.

Favorite is a hard call. I'd say a toss up between Imperishable Night and Subterranean Animism. Imperishable Night felt nicely fleshed out with Spell Card practice and the team mechanic. It really felt like ZUN stepped it up after Perfect Cherry Blossom. You even had two stage 6 bosses at the helm to take everything a level higher. I felt ZUN really went all out with this one, so it was kinda disappointing when I saw how low-key Mountain of Faith was after PoFV (but to its benefit MoF had what I feel the best soundtrack). However, outside of score, the time mechanic felt more or less useless. I have no intention of using a continue, so that extra hour is of no consequence to me. At least cherry points net me free bombs and UFOs obviously.

I put Subterranean Animism up there for being balls harder in comparison to the rest of the series. It really helped set the mood. You're going underground to the former parts of Hell so clearly the youkai there won't be sunshine and rainbows. ZUN also pulled some neat things off with the bosses too like Utsuho's large suns or Satori's power giving you six different experiences. The soundtrack though, didn't impress me outside of Parsee's theme and Satori's theme, especially after Mountain of Faith. The best part of SA was that it felt like ZUN did a better job of working with his new game engine by putting unique bombs back in (and via a partner system, no less), which would later segue into UFO's glorious return of the Master Spark.

>>5769045
I always thought people suggested Perfect Cherry Blossom or Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as a starter game, to prevent being overly conditioned to Imperishable Night's longer deathbomb times.

>> No.5769359

EoSD without a doubt, since I love its raw kind of feel. Also, Remilia is my favorite fight in all of Touhou in terms of fun.

I never went in that direction. Youmu's shots are narrow for me and Yuyuko's too slow--in other words I'm bloody impatient, so I'll typically settle on Remi/Sakuya and when I feel like I need to train on tapping keys, Alice/Marisa.

Still haven't 1cc'd it, despite the notable advantages--Stage 4 always rapes me.

Marisa's not too bad once you realize that you HAVE to do some spellcards by destroying familiars.

>> No.5769555

>>5769526
That's a problem on a whole for me cause I'm dumb enough to continue to play conservative and not toss out bombs until death approaches. For Reimu and her non cards and cards I have an easier time, but Marisa tends to shut me down if I DON'T bomb her every instant.

>> No.5769556

My favorite is PoFV.

Because it was the only game that worked normally when every game I was downloading (when touhou took my attention) was broken in some way. No music, or any keys working, etc.

Since it was my first game it was really special and even with such a boring plot I end up liking it, especially the endings or dialogues with Shikieiki. (That's important to me since it's the thing that appeals me the most in the touhou universe)

>> No.5769564

Of the standard games I would say EoSD is my favorite. It's simply because the mechanics for it are the simplest. No cherry points, no time orbs, no faith, just point items and power items. You try to go PoC as much as you can during the stage and then you fight the boss to the best of your ability. Simple, but fun.

My favorite game overall I would say is StB though. I'm not sure why.

>> No.5769566

>>5769556
PoFV has pretty satisfying endings, yeah. I spent a day just playing it over and over to see them all.

>> No.5769574

PCB. The point-life systems were better in it's line of games. The hitbox addition was a good idea and the cherry border is the thing I miss most from the games. It's like a protective shield, but you tried NOT to use it anyway because it would give you points or you could use it as a free bomb rather than just get hit. All the other games have no variety after you pick your character.

Alice's fight is pretty with all the colored bullets and dolls flying around and Youmu and Yuyuko's fights are pretty interesting. Selecting the Prismriver you wanted to fight was also cool, as was just nuking them all at once with a master spark.

It didn't have exceptionally memorable stage music though having some of the best boss music, nor do I generally like the characters from the game.

>> No.5769590

Subterranean Autism. Great soundtrack and a lot of fun danmaku patterns. However I found the story to be lacking a bit, and the Extends were annoying to get.

>> No.5769594

Reimu and Marisa are the only (relatively) challenging bosses in Imperishable Night. And by 'relative' I mean compared to the other stage 4 bosses in the Touhou games.

IN's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and final boss was easy. Reisen and Eirin's danmaku was style over substance.

Favorite, huh. Like most others in this thread, that's a hard pick, but I'll have to go with PCB. It was the first Touhou game I played. I like the music and the cast. I've only 1cc'd it once, using SakuyaA.

My first 1cc was IN, followed by PCB, then MoF. I've been working towards EoSD, but I'm not there yet. SA and UFO just rape me, so I've been avoiding them. I have a very hard time (1 in 10, maybe worse) getting past Yuugi. I've never finished Stage 4 in UFO, so I can't practice it. It hurts.

Getting over the time point barrier is a fun goal in and of itself for me, but you also get more points at the end for time AND, of course, if you have enough time points when you beat the stage boss you get to face their last card.

Highly Responsive to Prayers. I hate danmaku and fighting games.

I can 1cc PCB, IN, and EoSD Hard and I still can't do SA or UFO Normal. And I hear UFO Hard is a pretty substantial jump in difficulty.
