I laughed. Not out loud but I did kinda inside.

More like I smiled, really.

I've always wanted to know how to do this. Every thread back on old /a/ that I asked in would die after I posted. I never bothered asking again, but now that someone knows how to do it, mind giving me a guide or something? I know it has to do with the way 4chan handles PNG transparency, that's all.

Actually, it's mostly down to gamma (with the way I do it anyway, don't know if there's an alternate). Most (but not all) browsers take the PNG's stored 'display me at this gamma level' chunk into account when showing the image but 4chan ignores the gamma value when it generates thumbnails.

Let me know if this is enough explanation (if not then a better explanation will have to wait a few hours, I've got to go out shortly):

Two images on separate layers in PS.

Both are masked with a 2x2 pixel black/white checkerboard so that every other pixel is transparent. Mask on one image is inverted (white then black rather than black then white) so if you display both layers you get a merged image. You can do a different mask if you like, such as 2 black, 1 white & 2 white, 1 black (the Hanyuu pic does this so it has more 'visible' for the thumbnail pic than the fullsize one) but the point is getting the merged view.

Use levels on one layer to squish it's output to a small range at one end or the other (like 240-255 or 0-30). Which end of the range depends on if you want the full image to show black or white in it's inbetween pixels. This image in the short range is the fullsize image.

Squish the other layer (the thumbnail) to the rest of the range if you want to ensure it's not visible at all on the fullsize pic (e.g if hidden layer is 240-255 set the thumbnail to 0-239). This results in a cleaner fullsize pic but can make the thumbnail a little off colour.

(blah, too long, see next post).

Export for web as PNG.

Open in TweakPNG. Open preview window and ensure gamma correction is ticked from the options menu of the preview. Alter the gAMA chunk value until your full preview looks good (if you squished to 240-255 you want something like gamma 0.03).

Preview options -> untick gamma correction should show the thumbnail image. Might be some 'ghosting' of the fullsize pic but this shouldn't be visible when it's a resized thumbnail.

Post (another example attached).
