Sakuya/Meiling is one of the few pairings I flat out dislike.

I'm usually just indifferent to pairings that I don't like, and while I like/don't mind the idea of the two of them getting along, the idea of a romantic involvement between them just feels very wrong to me.

It might be Sakuya's canonical devotion to her work and Remilia that makes it feel wrong; I really can't see her being too preoccupied with anyone that isn't Remilia. It just seems too out of character.

They esthetically look good together, though, I'll give you that.

Funny thing is, haven't seen a lot of actual romance between the two.
Read one or two doujins that had them in an actual romantic relationship, but other than that the pairing tends to portray them as either very close friends, or - on the other side of the spectrum - having no relation beyond just blind lust, sometimes one sided.

Something for everyone unless you happen to fall in the middle, I guess.

There aren't that many translated doujins with them as the main pair, that's true, but seeing trends on pixiv and danbooru I can tell the pairing has gained a lot of fans the last half year. The ship was mainly limited to Meiling's one-sided feelings for Sakuya when I was new to Touhou a few years back, but now a days there's plenty of artist devoted to more romantic portrayal of the two, even if it still kinda drowns in the amount of Remilia/Sakuya material.

It's understandable. After all, whatever the backround to it may be, Sakuya is unquestioningly loyal to Remilia. Remi says "do this", Sakuya says "yessir" or your honorific of choice and does it. To Sakuya, Remi means basically everything.

Ironically just that may have contributed to the whole Sakuya/Meiling growing out of proportion as it has. Though Remi is everything to Sakuya, Sakuya isn't exactly Remi's equal, nor has any chance to become. Not to mention that at the end of the day, they still are master and domestic servant (although Sakuya is more of a lady's companion than a plain maid).
Perhaps then it's perceived that Sakuya and Meiling have more in common as people than Sakuya and Remi do.
But I'm not really seeing it work since presumably there'd be just as much of a gap between Sakuya as a gifted human and Meiling as a youkai.

I'm not exactly a big fan of the pairing, but I suppose its not the weirdest to come out of the fanon. However, I really dislike the whole "Sakuya is a bitch to Hong since she is dere" thing that seems so prevalent with this pair, when its shown that Sakyua is very nice to her fellow employees, gate guard or otherwise.

It varies a lot, though. Plenty of youkai prefer a specific environment, and a handful are described as building nests or lairs for comfort or protection.

Know it's a common idea that Meiling is tough as nails (and sucks at danmaku), but haven't read anything that would neither confirm it nor rule it out.

As for interpretation, though I enjoy the imagery still feels like something's missing from the "blind lust" interpretation of the pairing. Maybe it is that not a lot of H doujins on the theme - in good tradition - offer any worthwhile buildup that doesn't seem forced. Sometimes they avoid it by jumping ahead and having them already in bed on the first page, which seems a bit stiff and forced in itself.

But I'm not going to analyze what's fundamentally drawn porn. Because way smarter people have already done that, and nearly without exception ended up coming out dumber.
