I have nothing against slice-of-life, Kamichu is one of my favourite anime and I love both YKK and Aria.
I might actually go so far to say that it's one of my favourite genres.

Like everything older slice of life series' had because it was always a SUB-GENRE and never something that could exist really on it's own.

There are a few exceptions, like Aria or YKK.

But for the most part real slice of life is partner to one or two other genres - like an anon mentioned, GTO is heavy on drama but it's very much a slice of life. You're Under Arrest, Mushishi, Tenchi, fucking Bamboo Blade, etc etc etc.

Slice of Life is meant to capture life that is INTERESTING without going into something completely different and still holding a day-to-day life feel to it. It's not supposed to show you girls eating cake or making friends because nothing is happening there.
