Let's play some PoFV

You need version 1.50a
And Adonis.

1. Download Phantasmagoria of Flower View.
2. Update & patch it with English translation.
3. Download Adonis(it should be already included with the English translation).
4. Run the game, set controls, shot type etc. Run custome.exe and check if everything's alright. Disable firewall.
5. Run adonise.exe
6. Press "c" to connect to a host, "s" to host a game.

I don't even know. The moment we got to that infinitely long spellcard match where we just juggle lv2 spellcards back and forth without even really putting much effort into dodging, I just kind of stared at the screen in silent amusement. That was funny.

Anyways, you either win or you lose. Being that the internet is the only thing I do (and show some competency at), naturally I feel extra shitty when I fail within its domain, as I really have zero worth outside of that.

I really can't tell what happened with the experiment. I drank a heaping mug of caffeine before we started again, then every time there was a pause (one of us dies) and every time we're at character select, I took another heaping drink. Depression cleared right up - i'll have to keep that in mind for later. As for gameplay, I think it helped. A tiny bit. I can't really tell because I didn't really take character matchups into consideration (the truth is that certain characters are just absurdly powerful, and others don't really have their own weight agains them) - towards that last match, I had about four mugs. The effects I noticed were as follows: I could see a lot more bullets. I could watch much more things at the same time. I could see what was ahead and around and act accordingly - but every so often I would get twitches that completely defied this knowledge - twitches that got me killed a few times.

I'm really not going to invest time "getting better" at such an ancient game. The elements of randomness, too, sort of completely fuck everything over. Sort of why I don't like Hisoutensoku because of the random weather.

That's all. On the bright side, I feel much better. Thinking about that, I should really take a moment to say thank you for the matches, and sorry for being a tremendous faggot if I came off like that - I just do that, and I really don't know why.

What kind of controls you are using. Gamepad? Keyboard with Slow charge type? I ask since I noticed you were running around unfocused a lot, even as Aya, which is silly.

Anyway, it was nice to see that you were trying to set up longer combo chains for more Bpoints, but you often waited so long that you let your Bpoints reset entirely. Keeping your Bpoints up not only recharges your spell bar faster, but will also unleash free level 4 attacks at 100000, 300000, and 500000 (with a free level 3 to go with it).

I also noticed that you almost never charged an attack, but instead just bombed. Bombing has the disadvantage of spending your entire spell bar for the attack, leaving you helpless until you can recharge the spell bar back to at least 2. If you charge the attack, not only are you able to select the level of attack you want, but it reduces the cost of the attack by one. You will have to predict when you will need them, but it will greatly extend the life of your spell bar (letting you launch 3 level 2 spells back to back, for example), and let you play more defensively in general. You can visit the Gameplay and Strategy pages of the Touhou wiki for a better explanation of the game mechanics.

That's as specific as I can get right now, the rest will come with experience, familiarizing yourself with the different attacks your opponent has, getting a feel for timing your Bpoints, etc. So just play more. Even if you don't get better, experienced and new players can still play together and have fun with the correct handicaps in place. /jp/ takes it easy and pretty much everybody I play with chooses random characters, which is nice, since otherwise it would be Reimu/Marisa/Youmu/Shiki all day.

Adding my own thoughts about the gameplay. Most is already covered in the strategy section of the wiki so yes, definitely pay a visit there.

Staying ahead of your opponent's spell bar would be an ideal scenario, but so much shit can get in the way (like boss summons / Lily White) and your hand may be forced. In some cases you'll want to be extra careful about launching your Lv2 charge, such as Aya's. Easy to handle by itself and you'll end up with fast bullets reflected back at you.

In the beginning when bullets are sparse you may want to sneak a glance to your opponent's screen every now and then to keep track of their Bpoint count. Unless you want to shoot it down for an item it may be best to counter it, and so you'll monitor your own Bpoint count and drop the chain when necessary. Constantly shooting will reset the hit counter and hinder your rate of Bpoints and meter charge. It's also good to glance every now and then to see if the opponent is unable to muster a Lv2, then you can harass them while the screen is crowded (like Sakuya's Lv3). Launching Reimu's Lv2 in succession will cause the later waves to spawn without reflectable bullets (pretty sure).

It's a bad habit of mine to try and shoot down Lily White almost everytime she pops up. If you're late into the game when it's chaotic and you're not using a character with a decent charge attack (Marisa, Yuka), you might want to ignore her. Lyrica also makes for a good pick, and Lunasa as well but it's not quite as easy as Yuka. I believe the fairy and spirit explosions help towards damaging Lily White.

I was also going to mention that when things start getting really cluttered later in the game with destructible bullets everywhere, it is important to be aware of nearby fairies and spirits so that you can safely reflect as many destructible bullets as possible. When there is are swarms of bullets or level 2 attacks with troublesome destructible bullets (like Tewi's or Reimu's to an extent), activating a spirit and saving it for the right moment can be a life saver.
