I was browsing Tohno for a couple hours and I was wondering...just how NEET/hiki /jp/ is? I know most of us like to say we're ronery or rejects or whatever but a lot of people still go to school or work and have friends.

How many of you are actually alone?

Pic related, it's from a semi-frequent /jp/ poster.

I have been pretty much alone for the past 7 years or so. I was kicked out of high school since I had real bad social phobia and was not attending. I have basically spent the past few years waking up..drinking tea...and sitting on the internet. I fund this through what is basically welfare. I have not had any friends since high school and even then I didn't really have any. I'd say I qualify as being pretty fucking NEETy.

To top it off, as long as I can afford internet bills each month I have no desire to change. What's the point? I'm happy how I am and don't have any urge to participate in society by wasting 80k on a degree so I can work for 50 years and retire.

I admit I'm not a NEET or a Hiki. I have a good career, nice car, place of my own, etc. My only problem is lack of a loving relationship. For some reason all of my friends are guys; women generally can't stand me. I'm also not exactly social either, which is part of the problem... I walk five minutes to work, and walk home.... I rarely do anything else.

How so? In a simplistic way, you and I have all the same things. I have a place of my own, a fairly new car, lots of expensive shit but I'm a hikikomori. Material goods don't buy you a better status in society nor ultimately do they provide you with happiness. I can afford this because I don't have regular expenses most normal people do like a relationship, social expenses, kids, whatever; I just have a few bills to pay and some real ghetto car insurance. Assuming you're not so shallow of a human being to believe nice "things" make you a better person, you really have no upper hand in life. You're still alone and have no girlfriend and probably beat off to lolicon since you're here on /jp/.

Believe it or not, I actually agree with most of what you said. Material possessions don't mean shit and certainly don't make one's social status any higher, but I believe that career success and how you use your money does change your status in life, at least professionally. If that wasn't the case, people wouldn't get RSUs, trophies, overseas trips, and bonuses awarded to them.

Again, all I'm saying is that being overly socially successful or being overly professionally successful equally bars one from NEET or Hiki status. Is that really wrong?

Pretty hiki here. Live with my single mom. I go to a community college, though only taking one class over the summer. I have no job and don't really buy much at all since my mom pays for food. Not that I have any money anyway. I'm also really fucking lazy, and I have no idea why. I'm doing well enough in school, but I can't seem to change my lazy habits. Friends from high school moved away so I'm alone most of the time. Haven't found anyone at this school that I'm willing to be friends with or even hang around. I'm not sure if it's because I'm at a community college, a place where human trash tends to gather, or because I just have really high standards for friendship. Shit's lonely bro and mildly unsatisfying, bro.

Eh...actually the reason people get bonuses and things is to keep them working. If you don't give people treats like a dog they won't keep putting in effort, it's not because you actually earn it, it's because if they don't give you that bonus you won't continue working and no one else would either.

This is pretty basic shit.

As for the last thing you said - I agree except for the fact that you can be a NEET and be plenty social. Hikki and neet are not the same thing, and being a NEET has nothing to do with human interaction - it just means you don't work, aren't training to work, and aren't going to school.

Basically anyone on unemployment is a NEET, you can still be a normalfag and be super social.

It should work the same for you if you're in the USA.

I don't completely remember, but it really comes down to how you present yourself and whether or not you are trying to get better.

I know it helped a lot getting me on that I had been seeing a therapist for several months before applying - this is a good idea if you want to get accepted because it shows them they won't just be feeding a leech.

And don't try to have pride or anything when filling out that paperwork about your daily life, if anything try and sound as pathetic as possible without lying. It seems obvious but people still try to lie and not admit things even when they are doing it for something like this.

After that they just send you to a psychiatrist that works for them for one visit and he decides if they will pay you or not, then theres usual paperwork and shit but at that point you're already accepted so yeah.

Though I have a meeting coming up I just got a letter about today, not sure what it's about but it's annoying.

Is that really true of all industry? I mean, quarterly bonuses are one thing if you meet the goals you and your manager agree on, but being nominated by your peers for an award plus an all expenses paid trip is a bit much...

There has been a lot of sociological research into this stuff (which is why every single type of job has it) that's proven pretty much no matter what any bonuses, raises, trips, awards, etc are just there to make people feel content with their job and continue being motivated.

Are there exceptions? maybe in like mom & pop places where Jose the illegal mexican dishwasher gets a free meal because the owners feel nice, but other than that it's all for the good of the company - not for the person, and it has nothing to do with status or caring about you, just to keep you motivated.

They told me that same shit.

I have had to stop going to the therapist due to insurance issues (they fucked all that up, no surprise) so I've been waiting like 6 months to start going again.

Problem is, now it's been about 9 months since I got on SSI and they just sent me a letter saying they might stop paying me. I'm assuming it's just red-tape stuff and basic bureaucracy waste of time, but it's still a bit worrisome as they could think I'm just taking the money and have no intention of getting better.

Either way I have enough of an explanation that they won't be able to remove me from SSI over any of this so whatever. Still annoying though.

Ah, well. I'm in Canada so it might differ due to bureaucratic shit.

I've been to psychiatrists in the past and have been hospitalized in a public hospital many times for hallucinations..so I bet they have me on file. I actually broke out of the hospital once and was arrested, but this was 4 years ago or so. I bet this would still work to my advantage though, at the very least demonstrating to them that I'm pretty much a screw up. I'd probably have to see a psychiatrist again to determine how bad I am socially, which would be okay. I can imply I'm attempting to get better which I became really good at over the many years.

Is the money they give you enough to live alone, or do you live at home? I'm worried if I apply it won't be enough to live on and I'll be stuck unless I can work or get additional income some how.

Depends.

You see, I live in Los Angeles which has the highest cost of living in the US, and much of the world at that.

The idea of living on your own even with a good job here is pretty much a dream, even shitty apartments in the ghetto cost more to rent than a nice 2 story house in another state or area would per month.

As for how much they give you - here it depends on a lot of stuff, and they make you fill out a long survey type of thing to find out how much they want to give you. Things like how many people do you live with, siblings, where you live exactly, what kind of food do you eat (fast food all the time, cook your own stuff, microwave shit, etc), and other mundane shit like that.

So it depends on your personal situation.

Also, healthcare is terrible here, I'm sure in Canada you'll get a better deal than I did.
