I didn't hate Shirou but he was still pretty boring. Although he had a "goal", silly and impossible as it was, he was still the kind of quiet loner that Shiki and Mikiya were. And although it's blown out of proportion, he was still pretty dense.

Both Shiki and Shirou are really dense.

There difference between Shiki's and Shirou's denseness is that Shiki is uneducated (how can he not know what Christianity is, FFS) and dorky in a quirky way, Shirou has a lot of obscure knowledge but he's a social wreck because of messed up priorities.
