No it's not. My cousin is fairly severely autistic, and he does not sit around drooling, nor does he wear a helmet. He does, however, have severe communication issues and will try to involve people in nonsensical "pre-scripted" conversations, and repeat the same phrases or questions over and over and over.

I was so much of social shut-in in my early childhood they actually thought I was autistic.

But Things changed for the better.; it later turned into hyperactivity. Then ADD.

Now I'm just a regular adult.

My friend is a severe schizophrenic. I witnessed him slowly go from normal to crazy.

From my experience he didn't have multiple personalities, he just acted like he lived in a different sort of world.

He came up with all sorts of stories and mythologies how my friends parents were God and Mary and their son was Jesus. He started wearing a rubber lighter cover on his thumb and he started wearing rings on his left hard "his good hand". Later on he was walking around outside with a knife and smearing button on people's door knobs. That's when he was hospitalized.

He is now on meds, and as far as I can tell he is a different person on them but he sure isn't crazy anymore.

I'm not completely sure. At first he seemed to have a lot of dissociation. Then delusions followed. I personally wasn't there when he was walking around in his underwear outside with a knife stalking people while putting butter on door knobs, but I think he ought to have had some hallucinations to be at that point.

Most of the time it happens to people when they're severely sleep deprived. It has to do with your visual processing going all haywire and what was actually a tree, your brain decided was a humanoid ostrich. Doesn't matter that the tree looks nothing like an ostrich, it's just how you erroneously processed it.

I had this happen to me as well, I hadn't slept in something like 30 hours and I saw a giant hand explode out of a highway exit sign. It was then I decided I really, REALLY needed to sleep for my own good.
