Dear /jp/, i pose you a legit question.

Why has touhou become the god awful plague that it is now, were the games not enough, how do you explain the huge rise in popularity and never ending edits of everything possible into touhou related stuff.

Granted the music is sort of alright. but i can't see the appeal to the level i see people taking it to.

The only Touhou I played was PCB once and uninstalled it. I'm only into Touhou for the douin music and fapbooks.

The characters. Not because they're extremely well made characters or anything. It's more like when you read a book rather than watching a movie, it's more stimulating, because you get to imagine a lot of stuff yourself, rather than having it shoved down your throat. Same with Touhou characters, they're very fragmentary, just having a few basic traits, and allows you to interpret the rest however you want, developing exactly the kind of feeling you like for each character. Then, you go to Comiket, and see a bunch of people with their own ideas of your favorite characters, and you can browse through their doujin works, and find out what interpretations you like, and which you don't like. It's completely up to you to take whatever character you want, and build upon it with your own imagination, and choose what fanon traits to accept or reject, in order to fill the canvas.

To add on this, the games' plot is minimal, and doesn't do much more than show the setting.
A game with minimal plot and a strong setting is a perfect white canvas for fans to color on.
Just like he said fans are free to see characters how they want, they are also pretty much free of making up relations, interactions, adventures, and so on. It's all left up to the reader.
The "god awful plague" isn't Touhou, is the users who use Touhou for whatever means they like be it moe, funny videos, meme, roleplaying or whatever.
