I prefer tranquil, melancholic Gensokyo.
A place where forgotten gods and demons dwell after abandoning human world.
A long twilight of a once bright and magical world.
Maybe not always peaceful, where old ways are still remembered, but whose inhuman inhabitants would rather recall former glory over a cup of tea than start trouble.
Where the laws of old became the tradition of present, followed out of free will, not fear.
Where gods and spirits might still watch over humans, but usually only meddle in their affairs out of boredom, not to gain power and faith. Because they know, deep down, that if gods are a burden on humans, they will be abandoned and forgotten with time.
A human living in such Gensokyo might meet a youkai or a fairy if he gets a bit too far from the village, or wanders too long after dark - but he doesn't live in fear of the terror that inhabits the shadows anymore.

I like the mysterious gensokyo, where people are mostly friends or at least civilized. At least, that's how it is for the named characters.

For example, Hakugyokurou might be a very scary, far-away seeming place for the average resident of a place like the human village, the stuff of legends or nightmares, with stories about the gruesome half-ghost gardener, a murderous youkai tree and the
ghost of a woman who killed herself when she learned that she was able to control death itself.

For Reimu on the other hand, Hakugyokurou is a nice place to hang out with Youmu the half-loli/half-sperm and the cheerful and carefree Yuyuko.

I could clarify; I don't mean that the average residents are unhappy, I believe they live quite normal lives, mostly unknown to the danmaku battles that occur around them, but not entirely, since half of the point with gensokyo is that legends and such are actually true, and the general populace is aware of this, as they are aware that Reimu repeatedly saves them from certain doom.

It all fits together quite nicely, really. All the named characters are extremely powerful if you think about it, they're gods and shinigamis, they control Death, Time, Space and Boundaries. There would be no point in grimdark fighting between them. An all out war would completely destroy gensokyo, and after implementing spellcard rules these powerful beings have gotten quite used to one another, considering some of them have lived for a very long time.
