I'm going to try and learn Japanese since I have nothing better to do with my life for the next few years. Which writing system is easier to learn: katakana or hiragana? And which should I learn first?

Doesn't matter which you learn first, but you need both.

Focus on katakana and hiragana first then move onto kanji.
