So I was thinking of picking up Etrian Odyssey.

I just have one question: should I start with the first game, or is it okay to just begin with the second?

Also, have some horrible voice acting.

>> No.5458762

Second one. Doesn't matter which to start on. First one gives you a code for a special item in the 2nd game if you beat the first one.

>> No.5458768

You don't have to play the first to play the second, cause I don't think there's a story to the game. Also, don't start spending money from the get go, except for a few potions. You'll need it for when you die and have to revive yourself, which takes money, and the cost gets higher the higher the level of the fallen character. Teaching your healer healing skills is top priority, so be prepared to do some grinding. I hate this game why can't I stop ;_;

>> No.5458785

Yeah I know, it's horrible to actually have a job and not being some summer-faggot from /v/.

>> No.5458789

Also, EOII is made WAY easier of you abuse the fact that bosses respawn after 14 days and grinding them can be both very profitable and make your characters way over leveled.

>> No.5458798

>>5458768
You can't stop because you're a broken shell of a human.

Sometimes I think about how many potentially worthwhile people have been broken by video games and cry.

Thanks guys.

Just make this into a discussion thread or something if you want to, or I could just delete it if it's an eyesore.

>>5458768
You're doing something wrong. Once you get the medic out and some tp stuff, you should have no problem with tp. So your medic should be healing everything and reviving everything. On the off chance your medic does die (very rare) or petrify carry like 1 rhino cure thing and 1 revive. Easy game just lots of grinding, start at the second one OP.

>> No.5458829

Don't bother with the first. Its not that its horrible, but EO2 improves on it.

EO3 also comes out this fall, unless you know japanese, and getting tired of the series before that is released would be a shame.

>> No.5458831

You guys say it's an easy game but you act like having a medic is a given. Try playing without one.

Don't, this thread is better than the rest of that crap /jp/ has.

Why would you play without one? That's like trying to play without a protect or beast.

>> No.5458846

>>5458817
Oh, I don't have a problem anymore. But when you first start out and your medic doesn't know any skills, it's easy to screw up so bad you have to go back to the guild and make a new team. I started the game not knowing what I was getting into, other than drawing your own maps...

EO needs more dungeons to explore. And more/better quests.

Otherwise it's still a fun game.

Meiling what are you doing in my fire emblem

>> No.5458990

>>5458743

I played through the whole (DS) game.

After I finished it, I regretted it and wanted my time back.

I doubt there's much continuity. The story is so simple I could summarize it--well here, I will:

A mysterious labyrinth below the city. The city makes its living off the adventurers who explore the labyrinth and try to solve its mystery. When you get deep enough, you encounter a mystery race of humanoids who merely want to preserve the mystery, but you kill them. Then you eventually have to kill the town mayor/guildmaster/whatever because he realizes that if you finish solving the mystery the town will dissolve. Then you solve the mystery.

The mystery is there's a big monster at the bottom of the maze causing all the mazyness and monsters

...but, to the game's credit, the fights were challenging. I tried to go out with a party of three instead of five and I got creamed right away. Most games of this type I'd manage to do just fine.

Also, when you're picking your point-buy levelups, save before you buy 'em. Some are useless. And, if you want to know how to unlock one of the greyed-out ones, just select it and it'll tell you. I spent so much time experimenting before I figured that out.

I will never play the second. I hated the first so much after I finished it...though the art was cute, and the map-drawing idea is neat.

I never found out what the red sling stone was for. It's probably a quest item for when you get a hunter up enough levels. I never allowed my characters to have unequal XP, so I never played the unlockable characters.

I did. My primary team was front: Dark Hunter, War Magus, back: Hexer, Gunner, Survivalist (the War Magus took the healing role, naturally).

>>5458743
If I had to choose between 1 or 2, I'd go with 2 (actually, I'd go with 3, but it isn't localized yet). Like people said, you don't lose anything from starting on the second game. Personally, I'd suggest playing both--if you have 300-400 hours of free time to spare.
