Any good DS RPGs? I'm bored out of my mind.

Pic related, last thing I played.

I'll use a very generous definition of "good" here, and I'll take RPG to include strategy/tactical ones and dungeon crawlers as well.

Chrono Trigger DS, Disgaea DS, Dragon Quest V DS, Etrian Odyssey I and II, Final Fantasy IV DS, Glory of Heracles, Knights in the Nightmare, Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story, Rhapsody, Suikoden Tierkreis, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier, SMT Devil Survivor, The World Ends With You.

Sad that a lot of the good ones are remakes.

About to finish this one, is FF III good? I'm thinking of trying it after, or should I just go Chrono Trigger?

that game was so gay, especially the main emo hero.

I liked trying out different jobs until I found ones that Refia looked good in. It's okay. The game started out a bit hard, but became too easy for the last third.

Didn't play far enough into it to be able to comment, especially now that the PSP version is on its way.

Alright then, I'm actually planning on playing all Final Fantasy games which can be emulated since I don't have any consoles.

It's alright, but there are many better RPGs on the DS. I'd really recommend Sands of Destruction if you liked Xenogears, the battle system is very similar. It's my personal favorite RPG on the system.

Any idea how to play FFVI? I only hear good things about it, unlike other FFs.

Devil Survivor and Valkyrie Profile.

I'd recommend Strange Journey, Devil Survivor, and The World Ends With You.

Ugh, no. I'm a huge fan of the series, VP2 being my favorite game of all time, but the DS version is such a terrible game.

You mean FFVI Advance? Just download an emulator (e.g. Visual Boy Advance) and the ROM (Google it, GBA ROMs are easy to find).

>>5443663
I recently started on Sands of Destruction and so far enjoy it quite a bit (about 2 hours in), and the battle system seems interesting, but isn't it pretty much broken? So many of the moves seem extraneous when you can get by just comboing the Y moves almost all the time.

I don't really have any idea and still have yet to play it, just started with this and went for FFIV, then after this I'll be going FFIII (see: >>5443654 ) then probably 7 and 8, and try to make pcsx2 work for the PS2 ones. Yeah, just started playing this sort of game, was never really interested in console rpg, more of an mmo guy
For the emulators though, I haven't really encountered any problems ever since except for Pokemon Soul Silver where there were several crashes.

I don't think anyone is recommending it for the story. The gameplay itself is nice, though.

Yeah, certain skill paths are pretty broken. If you want an additional challenge, though, you can always not learn them.

No one mentioned Avalon Code? It was a fun little game.

It had a great concept, but the code system was way too troublesome. Being able to store only four codes was just too few.

The story is pretty good, it's a story about warring kingdoms, intrigue and such with a beatiful atmosphere. Think a slightly more grimdark Suikoden.
The main problem is, I think the "nightmare" in the title is actually referring to the game system. I'm not confident I can convey how complex it is into words, but I'll try.
You basically have a few soldiers each stage, in a classical TRPG grid. They can't die. Most are fixed in their starting position and they can't move. They can attack according to various patterns that change with each class, and one or two classes change their position after an attack. This is the only way to change your soldiers position.
Now, how do you actually attack?
Before battle you choose four weapons, and only 4. Weapons have limited uses (think Fire Emblem) and can be used only by certain classes and in a certain phases, so you have to equip smartly or you'll find yourself unable to do anything at all.
To attack, you have to drag with the stylus the weapon from the screen side to the character and then either let go immediately for a normal attack or wait some seconds so that the attack build up and the charact performs a special that consumes magic energy.
While you're dragging around your weapon, the battlefield suddenly becomes a touhou-like shooter, with enemies raining bullets down on you while you're trying to give your character his weapon. If you hit the enemy, he releases crystals that you can collect to build up the magic energy needed for special attacks.

Enemies are divided into colors, and to win a particular stage you have to make three-of-a-kind on a roulette machine at the levels end.

This is not even a quarter of the basic gameplay, and doesn't even touch Law/Chaos phases and the whole recruitment character vitality notions, which are important to the game.
