Though I think you're wrong. Touhou project fandom is very memelike in its propagation.

Also, you should examine your reasons for liking it.

1) The games are hard, have (compared to most shmups) interesting storylines, and are (in their danmaku-ness) very pretty.

2) The characters are cute and engaging (both the canon and the fan-canon versions)

3) The fan base makes some addictive fan media (if you are one of the few who didn't learn about Touhou project through Marisa stole the precious thing, that doesn't make you cooler.)

These are all valid reasons for fandom. This "Secondary fans suck" shit is just misanthropes hating on their own kind because sad people want to feel more elite.

...and really, the Gensokyou universe and its inhabitants aren't more complex than the typical popular shonen stuff. They don't need to be (how much character development can you fit into a game where each person only gets a few paragraphs of dialogue/screen time?)
