This movie killed my inner Weeaboo.

I was about 18 years old; I was watching Naruto, Japan was number one with everything, I felt deep dissatisfaction that China and Korea were such backwards assholes because they didn't forgive whatever Japan did in WWII.

Then I saw this movie. With my family. The first half, I was trying to explain my uneducated forced collective why it was completely natural for all this to happen, that Japan was a big place and they were probably exaggerating anyway.

After a while, I realized I was panicking because while only a movie, it triggered a sudden collapse of trust in my mind. Was this really Japan?

After that, I've always observed Japan with a step back, a sceptical eye and somewhat more attention being paid during cultural studies.

I still love Japan, for all its wackiness, but I'm not blind anymore. And I've stopped looking at Naruto.

I think the Weeaboo phase is something every up and coming anime fan deals with at one point or another, with the duration and severity changing for everyone. For me, I started out like many kids in the ninties, starting with Gundam Wing and DBZ, later Candidate for Goddess (despite the horrible Toonami/AS version) but my true 'birth' came after watching Evangelion over the internet. After that, I went spiraling into the anime fandom, centering mainly around real robot series.

Unfortunately, this led to a period of about three or four months where I was in the midst of weeabooism. I don't like it now, and actually I regret a lot of what I did and said during those times. However, I think going through weeabooism is a lot like going through puberty. Something inside of you changes, you're rather awkward about your actions, and it's the point that causes many potential anime fans to drop out of the fandom afterwards.

I think most children of the mid-eighties/early ninties have basically the same background, with a few variations. Those variations seem to have a good deal of influence in how one develops in the fandom.

Thankfully for myself, I grew out of it, and now live as much of a normal life as anyone else here, whatever that means. I learned to suppress my powerlevel, and balance my priorities. While learing Japanese is interesting, I prefer Russian, and regular schooling takes precedence over both.

I'm relatively familiar with the Greek language, and Russian-style Cyrillic writing is very similar to that of Greek, which is why I decided to try it out. Basically my point of view in a nutshell.

However, something that has me rather confused is the desire to make a pilgrimage to Japan for an indeterminate amount of time which is nearly universally held by Japanophiles such as myself. While I do think it'd be an interesting place to go on vacation for maybe a week or so, I don't think an extended stay would be overly pleasant. If you're considering staying in Tokyo, it's packed beyond breaking point, with barely enough room to breathe. And if you're considering actually living there and getting a job, the horror stories about the job market and workers rights are enough to make me cringe. It's such bullshit that this movie has been called racist by so many without a good argument to back it up. It's not racist. Sure, it points out some amusing idiosyncrasies in Japanese society, but pretty much any movie made by one country with a plot set in another is going to be like this. I have yet to read an argument of the whole "racist" thing that has actually held together under scrutiny. It's about two white people set adrift in life as both are in periods of confusion, and they happen to come together briefly in Japan. It's created from the perspective of being briefly in a place where one is an outsider, but rather than try to integrate for that short time, two people latch on to each other instead.

HOW THE FUCK IS THAT RACIST?

Bill Murray makes fun of EVERYBODY in EVERYTHING and he does a great job of it. He's a funny guy. The Japanese are not special in receiving a few jabs here and there in the film. Are hilljacks and bowlers upset about Kingpin? Not so much. They think it's FUNNY.

I loved this movie. It was sensitive, minimalist, and expertly made. Not everybody likes it, but oh well.

I think the nature of their relationship in the film was that they knew nothing could "be" in the sense of an ongoing relationship, but they were both so fundamentally lost at this particular point in time that, together, they felt like they had something to hold onto, albeit briefly. Yes, I watch anime very occasionally if it is entertaining, but not because it's Japanese. However, due to the collective trolling of the internet, that classifies me as a 'weeaboo.' I know Japanese because its a useful skill for my job (along with Spanish and German...) and I think its cool anyone to learn a foreign language no matter how useful it would be to them. For me, I would say that I was a "true" weeaboo up through Middleschool/ Junior High through Freshman or Sophmore year of Highschool.

What killed it for me was

1)when I got a look at the fandom and how ridiculous it was. People were getting raging hard ons for the most ridiculous stuff, etc.
2) Lost in Translation kinda helped. I guess. I just thought it was a great movie.
3) I grew disillusioned with anime and Japan as figures of superiority for a number of Xbawks huege reasons.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't have much of an interest in Japan beyond entertainment, but if I'd seen Zatoichi-style movies about Cuchulainn, it's likely I would have developed a strong interest in my Irish heritage. Canadian culture is pretty bland and Zatoichi makes Japan look incredibly badass, so looking back on it now, I might have become a total weeaboo if I had been aware of what anime was at the time.
