/jp/ can you explain the touhou fandom to me? Why did it become so popular? What is there to obsess and talk about? Why is there a family?

God fucking knows.

The games are decent and all for one man projects, but the ridiculous hype connected to the characters is something I will NEVER understand. They're not fleshed out at all in the games (durr, shmup), the designs are pretty repeititve, not to mention ZUN can't draw anyway.

I get the feeling it was just a small group of enthusiasts who liked the games, who then just generally got latched onto by faggots trying to fit in.

I think Touhou is unique among fandoms in that the large amount of fan work that came up around it has probably created more fans for it than the games themselves.

I'm sure there are plenty of anons here who are into Touhou but have never played or barely played the games. I'm sure a lot of us also went a while before figuring out that all the characters we were seeing all over the place were from some amateur-made shooting game instead of an anime or manga.

I can't think of any other fandom that's created this effect, where people know the fan stuff long before they know the original.

Western toehoe fandom is mere weeabooism. Jap toehoe fandom is irrational and can only be explained by assuming the core fans were creative enough to surround the games with doujins and flashes and other fan-made crap that made other people interested in them and the 'touhouverse'.
