indeed, when I was at uni I did some stuff on icbm re-entry vehicles, one of the problems they faced was that the decellerations were so extreme that any electronics were subject to an induced current caused purely by the decelleration (electron drift) and needed to be hardened against it.

The Voyagers are off on a long journey, one that won't end even when their generators finally stop ticking in another fifteen years or so.
Think about it for a while. The average satellite only orbits for a few decades at most before breaking down. The space shuttle, which is pretty much iconic of our age, will probably be retired down to a museum specimen or two in a couple of years. The remaining preserved Saturn rockets remain in open air, exposed to the elements and the capriciousness of humanity. Not even something as distant and untouchable as our marks left on other planets lasts forever. Unless we get back up there and preserve them, even Neil Armstrong's footprints of the moon will eventually be gone.
Yet maybe hundreds or more generations after their creators' lifetime, the Voyagers will still be continuing their journey. Asleep in the silence between the stars, safely out of reach of a cruel, capricious world.

I wouldn't weep for them if I were you. But I assure you, bitter tears will be shed when Hubble closes her one weary eye.

Not announced in the current schedule, but eventually. She's been up there for 20 years, and a successor will be launched in four years from now. But then again, 20 years is VERY impressive for a satellite that was basically deployed fixed with duct tape and chewing gum.

Besides, it hasn't been wasted time in any way. I know it's a common expression, but if you think about it seriously... if there is any one single known entity at all that can truly be considered to may have "seen more than it should have", Hubble might be it.

The fifth servicing mission was deemed too risky after the Columbia re-entry breakup. The original plan was to de-orbit Hubble. It wasn't until late 2006 that NASA caved in to the public and political pressure to announce a service mission to extend Hubble's life. The May 11th 2009 serving mission was the last time human hands will ever touch the telescope though. I loved the pat goodbye one of the astronauts gave it before they detached.

In my opinion the only things that surpass Hubble in terms of great engineering are the Mars rovers. They certainly were never intended to last SIX YEARS on Mars, but they continue to operate (although one of them is stuck in a sand trap). Those suckers should be recovered and preserved.

Everyone only ever talks about the Voyager sisters.

But what about the Pioneer sisters? Why so forgotten?

Not sure. But I image if /jp/ got to decide, the Pioneers might be depicted as fujoshi with a shameful side interest in 70's adult novels.

Don't know why, but I can't look at the Pioneer plaque without conjuring up images from Valley of the Horses.

Because contact with Pioneer 11 was lost in 1995, and contact with Pioneer 10 was lost in 2003, with the last attempt in 2006 having failed.

The voyagers are still in contact, even though one is now spouting gibberish, thanks to space rays [the encryption was fucked up by an ultra high energy cosmic ray strike]

But it doesn't matter all that much, all 4 are going to be majorly fucked up once they hit the bowshock of the heliopause.
