The Star Spangled Banner sounds lame until you actually learn a thing or two about the battle of Baltimore that it recounts. The British, fresh from defeating Napoleon and rightfully regarding themselves as the most powerful military in the world, had rampaged across the eastern seaboard totally unchallenged and razed Washington D.C. with no resistance at all. Baltimore was the last line of defense against total British conquest. Had we lost there, the nation would have crumbled and come back under British rule, not even 40 years after gaining independence.

The British navy was stuck at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay because the local fisherman and privateers sank their boats to create an artificial reef, causing the water to be far too shallow for the British battleships to pass through. The commander of the fort commissioned a massive American flag so that after the battle was over, it could be hoisted above the fort and the British navy could see from across the bay that they had lost, as well as the land force invading from the other direction.

So it is actually quite a powerful song that depicts America in its absolute darkest hour, on the verge of conquest by a foreign superpower, but struggling through and surviving.

Well, Kazakhstan is known for having native practices involving marrying their kids with each other at an age they don't exactly grasp what marriage implies.
