Varies greatly from game to game. Honestly, I usually go for whoever I feel fits the main character best.

If I can't decide for whatever reason, or it's too close to call, then usually it goes by my personal preferences, which tend to favor (in no particular order) Tsundere, Yandere, tough/tomboyish, glasses (might coincide with another feature), and best outfit ( same as above, short skirt and thigh highs are best).

Generally though, I find the decision comes fairly naturally to me. There is usually one girl that just stands out as being the best fit for the main character, and I go for that one, provided that its possible (sorry Sacchin...).

I admire girls with a strong sense of self who aren't afraid of voicing their opinions.

I have to say that I often feel attracted to tsundere types, it's not that much the tsundere part in itself, it's more of a package, much of which usually goes hand in hand with tsunderes.
The tsun is good, it shows that the girl can or at least tries to stand on her own, wether or not she has trouble to express her true feelings or not doesn't matter much, in a way it's a trait that most of the time works against the quiet meek sterotype.
The dere part is of course essential too, I don't care if it's a gradual change over time or if it switches back and forth. The dere part is were we meet, 2 people must love eachother in order to have a good relationship with eachother.
I don't want a girl who blindly corrects herself after me, nor do I want a girl who I can't reason with and thus both the tsun and dere part are good.

The tsundere archtypes aren't always the characters who I feel fulfills this the best, but the essence of the tsun and the dere are usually traits that promotes the direction I admire.

It's not like you can't just go back to your previous save file and try again.. Hell, even if your last save file was to early, you can just skip to the next player decision.
I can understand checking a walkthrough for chance related shit, but other than that it would just divide your attention and make it so you won't enjoy the VN as it's meant to be.

Its not so bad on your second or third playthrough, but using it off the bat on your first playthrough is something I wouldn't do except in maybe some extreme circumstance..

If the VN allows you to skip entire scenes, then I definitely wouldn't use a walkthrough.
