Despite popular newbie opinion, you can actually conquer the entire map in your first game.

Go for the Mouri and Dokuganryuu house bonuses.

If you realize you're losing badly and it's your first playthrough just wait for the time jump when the game gives you 8/10s of the map. Beat it from there and replay from the beginning that way.

1. Don't spend money increasing troop sizes of any unit that isn't a footsoldier.

1. Use your satisfaction bonuses on reinforcements. Do Rizna and Uruza, then Kanami, Maria, Leila. Call Magic last.

3. Save the houses with gourds for last so you can expand as much as possible before Xavier appears. For example, destroying Iga early is a huge waste.

4. Try and have enough Tacticians so you can field one with each of your armies.

It's not because I made vassal countries, bad commanders or anything, I just got my commanders killed early by not knowing how to beat that homosexual guy.

Get the Takeda tactician and you will never lose.

Naoe Ai is good too, and so is uruza.

That would require beating Takeda first. I don't think this guy has the ability to do that yet.

It doesn't matter much early on, but the difference in strength between a buffed and unbuffed unit late game is tremendous (I made the mistake of ignoring tacticians in my first game as well). It also helps that the three unique tacticians are all stronger than any of the archers.

After you fight Xavier for the first time, if the Tenshi sect is still up, they offer to ally with you. Do it. A couple turns later, if you have an open spot in your army, Seigan joins you.

My first game was just terrible. I used no guides, no hints, nothing. I declared war on Iga and defeated them with out suzume (They come back later and fuck you over, I was at war with 3 countries when they decided to come back), I defeated tenshi sect and never got seigan. I never got any really good unique characters except for kenshin/ai, senhime and oily-chan. I had that one girl from Tanegashima with the killing shot, but never gave her working bee. I didn't get my third action fan until turn 40ish.

I still won my first game. Seriously, just fucking have fun, if you lose a little man it up shit face, you can take your territory back, especially from the demon army who you can bleed dry. All you people are so scared that you reload even if you lose one battle, grow up.

Oh and I got reinforcements from leazas, and gave maria the popularity staff. With her killing shot or whatever she could one shot anything in the game.
Never got the zeth girls until second playthough.
