I prefer CAVE shmups, but their desperate attempts at moe through doll pilots, gothic lolitas and giving giant fucking megadeath spaceships the voices of little girls are inferior to the hat-based loli variants in touhou.

I've always been a huge shmup buff.
Played to death almost every Psikyo titles (Strikers 1945 II and Gunbird 2 being my all time favorites), as well as a good portion of Konami and Cave shooters.
I still get around to buy the latest games of the genre whenever I have some spare change, but my main gripe is that I no longer have as much time as I'd love to spend mastering them.

Dodonpachi and other CAVE games are great. However, although it's maybe not the best game, I really like Progear no Arashi. The characters and setting are very nice; kind of "Castle in the Sky"-ish. The fact that it's a side scroller and yet CAVE is pretty interesting too.
